I think you've got a tenuous connection with reality. The most recent jackpot to make it past $1.5 billion (annuity value, of course) was the 10/11/23 PB jackpot that got to $1.765 billion. The cash:annuity ratio for that one was even worse than the current MM jackpot (43.86% vs 44.89%) so that annuity value of 1.765 billion required even fewer tickets to be sold than what we'd need to see the same advertise jackpot today. I say just play 5 lines every drawing no matter what the jackpot is. Have 5 regular sets of numbers and never change them. Have a group of predominately lower ones, higher ones, middle ones and then a mixture of lower ones and higher and middle ones with the other two so you feel covered no matter which range of numbers come in.

I think I concur with the poster who stated that they buy one ticket per $100 mil cash value.

You shouldn't get messed up in the hysteria or mania of the game only to kick yourself in the backside after you've spent x amount of $$$ that could have been allocated to something meaningful or purposeful... so to keep some sanity into your thinking you should come up with a formula or plan for playing before hand.

What will be interesting will be 2nd division..

nominally $1 million..

But with automatic multiplier in the range 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, AND 10x (Statistically averages out at 3x)

With 24 megaballs (down from 25)

What happens if someone plays all 24 possibilities for their dream numbers.. Wins. And the multiplier comes up 10x.

Go the GA lottery website and click on Mega Millions. The news flash is now added. Starting jackpots are $50 million. (Georgia BTW is where the drawings take place).

Though not crazy about the $5 price/ticket but I do like, unlike PB which cuts off 10X 'powerplay' Mega Millions does not. It's not like PB has 10X multiplier that often and the cut off needs to be eliminated.

The discussion is on THIS web site. The top 25 list I talked about is a list this website puts out and it covers the Major US lotteries.. PB and MM

I keep track of ticket sales and the last drawing on Friday, 12/20 statistically covered only 20% of all combinations as 60,000,000 tickets sold. This Tuesday probably 25% to 30% or so will be covered.

The record jackpot of $1,602,000,000 last 08/08/2023 had only 50% of the numbers covered so another rollover was very possible at that time.

I think the jackpot on December 31 will closer to $1.60 to $1.80 billion but we will see. If only 5... [ More ]

current yield on US 10y treasuries is 4.53% (on $429.4m =$19,451,820. Tax on that (top federal only (37%)) is $7,197,173 )

Well then, when you win the 944M you can tell the IRS, I am a multi-millionaire now and I want to pay as much taxes as possible on my winnings. They will be very happy to hear that. But before you file a claim on your winnings, make sure to move to a high tax state and establish residence so they can get their 10.5 - 11% of your win that first year too. By then you will have paid about 48% in taxes and your win will be down to 223-224.

Most other countries in the world (Spain and Italy excluded. They tax winnings at up to 20%) do not tax winnings.

They get their tax revenue at time of sale (a share of the ticket price)

Any income from the winnings is taxed.

So, millionaires in those countries still get taxed. Just like regular people .

I hv 1 set been playing for 26 yrs but the main ball is 25 and will have to chnge to probably 12 or quick pik the ball

Wow, you are the only one who has said he/she is excited about the new 5$ MM ticket price. Most of us have been saying we will no longer buy MM tickets. We will stick with the PB tickets instead. Officials for the PB say they will not raise their ticket prices to $5 because PB drawings are already 3 times a week. According to what I read, once the new $5 MM ticket price starts in April 2025, the jackpot will start at 50 million.

Possible, but it's a fairly big jump unless interest rates go up. Then we might see a $56 million bump in the advertised price but the real jackpot will go up by $10 or $15 million. Maybe people dreaming about a green Christmas will do it even without a bump in interest rates, but that requires a bump 2.5 times as big as the cash bump that got it from 825 to $862 million.
