Unless a person's self-employed an education is usually about upward mobility. The modern personnel departments are doing their best to make certain a BS or a BA is in the job requirements beginning as low on the totem pole as they can stretch things to justify it, about the way it used to be for a HS diploma. There are so many degrees floating around out there nowadays they can get by with it. Anyone who works for someone else in most white-collar jobs, but who doesn't have a degree is going... [ More ]

I have a B.S. in Business Administration and work in state government. I also earned a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer(MCSE) certification and a CompTIA A+ Computer Technician certification.I thought about doing an MBA a few times, but then realized it probably wouldn't help much, plus I'd end up way too far in debt. Even if I had the money I probably still wouldn't do it, not worth the trouble.I wonder what education is really about anyway.PrisonerSix

Excelsior College in Rochester has a good, accredited externa degree progam. So does SUNY. They'll allow you to test out on all manner of subjects if you've gotten some expertise in a non-academic way.J

I went to trade schools for carpentry in the 70's then OJT for all trades construction. Then during the 80's went to machinist school and got my apprenticship papers for machinist. Afterward went to night college for CNC mchining and OJT. In six yrs worked my way up to night supervisor and finally night shift manager. Cnc machining is one of the wildest jobs out there for the manufacturing industry. Awesome tooling and never a dull moment. Now i am enjoying my time doing the couch potato thing.... [ More ]

Hummm....nobody listed Tech School I pretty much brown nosed me way thru high school.Went to Tech school, got a little piece of paper that said I could almost draw a straight line.Tried going to real College at night for a few years. Of course it goes deeper than that. common sense is inherited in some people i think, but not others. My mother used to say she could talk to people for 5 minutes and know if they had common sense or not. Some astrological signs have more common sense than others i think. People develop common sense by trial and error. I think after you fail at some things, by doing the same task over and over you develop the beginnings of a common sense approach to things. Four4me:A lot of what happened to your saw involved something I'd call 'ethics', rather than common sense. But it also sounds as though neither of those guys knew enough to get up to the level of having common sense.I'd put common sense with power tools more into the arena of something that happened to my left forefinger and thumb a long time ago.I was a pretty fair-to-middling woodworker, had a good shop in the garage. Some of the sorriest people I've ever met had advanced degrees, BAs and BSs, HS diplomas, or quit school without finishing.That leads me to believe education might be a key factor in whether a person has any worth as a human being.Most of those same sorry individuals were either fabulously wealthy, moderately wealthy, well-to-do, average, living hand to mouth, or living under a bridge. barely (and i mean barely) .... a high school education. plus the God - school version of hard knocks. wouldn't trade it for an easier life and in hindsight, it is exactly perfect for the way that my life has gone.i like to read the obitiuaries to see how people measure themselves realizing there are more important accomplishments in life than what you read about. i find it fascinating that some people are impressed by that.and i usually never ask another man what he does for a living.... I am finishing my DDS. Already got my BS and MS. Thought about doing PhD (not great pay in academia) and MD (horrible hours and not as great pay as DDS). I like working with my hands though, plus I feel I can help more people immediately as a dentist.But, one of my objectives if I win is to have a practice that provides free basic dental work and oral health education to those who cannot afford it. Jack, don't worry, I have been told by some that I don't have alot of common sense either. I think I have hindsight common sense. I don't know how many times I have done someting highly stupid and only after it was all over and the chips fell, I realized just how silly I had been. I know lots of people who are book smart but have no common sense.. It is a waste to know that much information and not be able to apply it.I like to think of myself as book smart but not having any common sense, though I don't consider it a waste. I've yet to meet a Nurse that's had to deal with employment issues (layoffs, etc) that did not have a new job quickly. There is the stability, and the schedule flexibility, and you can make good money, plus there is a level of fullfillment in the field. Education of course is not so much what is given to you, but what you take from what is given to you and also from what they give to you and you give to yourself by reading good books and then there is also reasoning and meditation you can also enlighten yourself that way.As you see, my grammar stinks.I do have a little school, but I like to think of myself as being mostly self educated if there really can be any such thing, the expression self educated might just be a contradiction of terms.
