Back before lotteries the numbers rackets in Boston and NYC used to have a pick three every day. I don't know if it's still running... that was the early 60s.... cost a buck through bookies.... Maybe getting the private sector (the mob or whatever is serving that function these days) would help keep the government lotteries honest.Jack

I don't really care what they charge for a ticket as long as I get a chance to win per dollar spent. Ohio has always charged a dollar per ticket even when they sold 2 chances to win per ticket for a bigger jackpots (I guess 50 cent per ticket was too much troule). Lottery players aren't very smart but I doubt if most would be willing to pay $2 for a chance to win the same prize that now cost $1 per chance to win.RJOh

Kansas still has a half-dollar ticket. I read on one of these threads that NY does, also. Maybe the trend is running that way. If KS and NY are making a higher margin on 50 cent tickets than the others are making on dollar ones it seems to me there'd be a race to get there quickest by all.I'd bet KS is selling twice the tickets per capita and not giving away any more money than, say, NM Roadrunner. Maybe more than twice as many tickets per capita because a half buck seems like such a Gawdawf... [ More ]

New Hampshire had a lottery in 1964 and other states were selling tickets in the 1970s. Let's say you put $1 on the lottery in 1970. Today, adjusted for inflation, you'd be putting down around $5!I realize that $1 is a traditional amount...but I think that for better or worse, real soon, lotteries will make the jump to the $2 ticket in the expectation of higher sales.

When every game is multi-state. When pick-6 games have gone extinct, all replaced with 5+1 type games. When the only ball drawing states are in the south (where they're kept under more scrutiny, not neccesarily bad). When annuities pay out over 50 years? When every ticket costs $2 or more.I hope none of this stuff ever happens. But they're current industry trends.
