Please explain why Mega should be allowed then suddenly stopped? Why should the game not just be stopped now if you don't want it? What reason do you have for it to be stopped? Please explain this for me I'm not the smartest bulb on the Christmas tree if you will!I've seen where you posted this theory or want elsewhere please explain why Californians should no longer be allowed to play Mega even if they choose to? I checked both the websites of California and New York and both states contribute 32% of their MegaMillions tickets sales to the jackpot and use 18% of those sales to pay the other prizes. I assume the same is true for all MegaMillions states although they don't post it on their websites. Since California decided to go pari-mutuel after each game, winners won't know what they've won until after the money is counted and divided by a formula that depends on the number of winners in the state and... Todd, Squat might be an exaggeration, but one of the other state has five 2nd prize winners and each get $250,000 and California has three 2nd prize winners and it divides ~$250,000 among them makes MegaMellionsCalif and MegaMillions look like two different games. California shares the MM jackpot and gets the bragging rights of the MM game for a game that's only played in California.RJOh

Sorry, I don't agree with your squat comment. That's overboard.It's the luck of the draw. It's called gambling . All the States have a pari-mutuel back up plan if there are more winners than they planned for, I just can't figure how how California plan works. Last week New York had five 5+0 for $250,000 each, so its plan must allow for at least $1,250,000 to be paid out at the 2nd prize level. California paid out just a little more than $250,000 to all three of its winners this time.RJOh

I know I'm beating a dead horse but 5+0 prize (07/12/05) paying just $84,494 when under the old prize structure they would have gotten $175,000. I got to say it again - the new and improved payout MegaMillions amounts don't mean squat in California.RJOh

Just6ntlc -CA is pari-mutuel because that's the state law concerning all lottery games, from Pick 3 on up. That's why the payout structure is completely different for CA than for any other state with MegaMillions.glj

Well, I guess that's not totally accurate, because each of California's 5+0 winners got more than the old $175,000 prize. So the new prizes do mean squat -- and I certainly wouldn't be complaining

What's up with with the one 5+0 prize(07/08/05) paying just $213,608, when all five New York's 5+0 prizes paid $250,000 each? Looks like California pari-mutuel prizes formula is dependent on more than just the number of winners. Lower prize levels are up from the time before when there was a $290,000 5+0 prize winner, maybe they're taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Obviously, the new and improved payout MegaMillions amounts don't mean squat in California.RJOh

Yes, I started this thread by mentioning the very large 4+1 prizes. I guess we had a miscommunication on the $1 prize, because I thought you said that the lowest prize so far was $2.

With no one hitting 5/5 in California, that's how it happens. 2 tickets hitting 4/5+Mega got more money than $10K it got. I know that 6/24/05 had California only get $1 for 0/5+Mega.

The lowest prize was $2 when there was one 5+0 winner on the second drawing. Damn Mega Millions should not let CA award pari-mutuel prizes. It's unfair to the other MM states

I think all the other prize levels benefit when there's no 5+0 winner, because the lowest prize was $1 when there was a 5+0 winner.
