As a mac user I just smile when I hear about yet another windows worm. Some days I forget to turn on the firewall at all. For servers I could imagine using Netbsd or some other bsd variant. As for worms, I haven't seen a native OS X virus yet but macs are a much smaller target. I guess I'll have to wait for the x86 macs to come out before I'll have to worry too much.

Norton was what I got with my first computer and found it was unfriendly and problematic. The only way I could fully get rid of it and its crumbs was do a complete hard drive format and start over.Used Trend Micro's House Call free virus scan and cleaning for about 3 years until going to XP then downloaded a trial version of their PC-Cillin which is equal to Norton with automatic updates sometimes several times a day depending on the threat.I'm with Sandy, I won't have anything whatsoever to do... [ More ]

Ditto. I've never had a problem with Norton. And FWIW, MS did seem to jump on this thing...My AUto Update downloaded Security patches first thing this morning. And actually, worm is the name that should be used for the programmers of these things....it's more appropriate.

Sandy, you're absolutely correct about the worm and how it works. It attacks a Win2000 server, and then once inside, it can spread to any Microsoft box. Please be assured that the Lottery Post servers are, and have been, secure from the worm. The LP servers were never infected at all.The data center sent me an e-mail early this afternoon saying that we should expect the network to go down for another 20 minutes, so that was the second outage, and it was expected. I think they may be dealing... [ More ]

My son-in-law works in computer support with a large, national, financial firm. When they heard about the problem a couple of days ago, they installed the patches. I don't know how long it took, but they were not hit by the worm because they vaccinated all their computers first. And, yes, it was the Windows 2000 OS that was the target.

From what I understand, it only impacts Windows 2000 - clients and servers. If you have XP, not a problem. Win2000 is still DOS based, and that is why it was hit so badly. All of the XP machines at work escaped the problem. All the WIn2000 were burned; the main damage was the slowdown on the Win2000 servers. The servers don't actually go down, but by the time the connection is made, the time-out kicks you off. I also understand the fix-patch takes a long time to install, and has to be done on ea... [ More ]

When I bought my computer, I installed Norton, only to find out, I couldn't purchase anything online. This realization only came about after a 3 hour ordeal with a Compaq CSR.Finally a specialist was put on the phone, and he told me it might be Norton, and that there was too much security. He also stated that if I want to purchase online I would have to remove it. Sure enough it worked.I probably could have just lowered the security settings, but was so fed up after 3 hours, I didn't care.... [ More ]
