It's ironic that the PA lottery benefits senior citizens, when they have an online game they have no business playing because there's no cash option. At least Lose for Life winners in Virginia have a cash option, even if it's much lower than it should be.

I figured it had to be the northeastern or central part of the state. I have relatives in that area, and know it quite well.

I told my grandmother, an avid lottery player like most PA seniors (they pay for that 'free' bus ride one way or the other) that she'd be better off buying 2 Cash 5 tickets instead of 1 Lucky for Life largely because of her age. Close! In that general area. Also I am still trying to figure out how a lifetime of checks is unlucky. You will never again be completely broke, unless you are stupid. Even with inflation you will still have a lot more than those out there who have zero dollars.

There's a lot of rural towns where the median income is below 30K and homes can be had for $ 75K. You should be able to live off $ 52K a year. If you're set on a jackpot prize, I think you're better off collecting the regular payments and using a portion ($ 2-5K) to play the large jackpot games. At least, you're essentially playing with house money at that point and will never run out as long as you control expenses and protect yourself against catastrophic loss.

Also as I said many times before, annuity or cash, I could care less. As long as I am able to live better than I currently am now, and work is no longer a factor. Most cash options are not going to cut it, because the 'win for life' games are set up to be more easy to win, and with much lower odds.

I could live easily off of $27,000 a year and not work. Why? Because I am frugal, and make less than that now by choice. Would I live like a millionaire? Probably not, but in my area $27,000 is considered pretty well off. Especially if you do not blow money mindlessly. In fact the average salary in my area is about $15-$20,000 a year.

There is no 7th number on any one Win for Life ticket line; a play line only consists of six numbers. If a player a so chooses, he can include whatever he thinks the Free Ball will be among his six number selections on the play slip, but he still only gets to choose six numbers. If you happen to catch the Free Ball, you automatically have no chance of hitting the top prize, but it gives you a chance at winning 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th prize.

Actually, you can pick the Free Bal number if that's what you really want to do. All you have to do is include whatever number you think the Free Ball will be among the six numbers that you select on your play slip. If you're right about the Free Ball, that could help you out in winning some of the secondary prizes. But if you want to hit the grand prize, the trick is to avoid the Free Ball number.

WA Lucky for Life has a $750,000 cash option. Lose for Life doesn't have a cash option in GA (and KY?). The Virginia cash option is only $520,000. Ergo, WA Lucky for Life is a MUCH BETTER game

I choose annuity when given the choice and I'm not going to boycott any game on the sole basis of whether or not that's an option. I don't play games with bad odds and better options elsewhere (a la DE Multi-Win Lotto). That being said, if someone buys me a ticket, I'm not going to be upset about it.

The only time I might consider it is if the difference between the two is relatively small (ie: Hot Lotto $1M annuity vs. $500K cash) as I could make the difference easily in far less than 30 ye... [ More ]

Cash hasn't figured out (1) the lottery games are not there for his profit and (2) the Lottery Directors couldn't care less what he thinks or says. I have to make the choice EVERY time I play Mega Millions in NY. NY still requires MM players to choose cash or annuity whenever they play.

Unless a winner happens to know that he will die in less than ten years, taking a cash option for the minimum payout of $520,000 minus taxes is a sucker deal. Win for Life has a 6 of 6 grand prize of $1000 a week which is limited in duration only by the span of one's natural life. Anyone can take that cash option if it's offered in their state, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I'd rather ride that $1000 a week to my grave. I don't play annuity only games myself, but one hears all the time of people who do so.

Not everyone who plays the lottery is a responsible person. Some people like annuities and some people need annuities to give them time to adjust to having money.

Lotteries are only interested in sales. If their product sells they continue it. If it doesn't, they drop it or change it.

$36,000 is the pre-tax prize, you really end up with $27,000. And the poverty line in the US is $19,000/year (post-taxes). So you're only $8,000 (even less than my previous quote) above the line. Not enough to quit unfortunately. But I wouldn't scoff either if I won it on a gift ticket or something either, it would make good weekend fun money.

It all depends on what sales will support. 1k/week isn't enough for me to get a ticket. But it's enough for some. It failed due to poor sales in WA state. If it were 1k/day then I'd be interested. Providing they would do a ball drawing and not an Indiana style computer drawing.

I personally think Lucky for Life should go visit Kovorkian for a well deserved demise, but until such time I would not scoff at its payout if I won it.

As I've been posting, GA will not offer a cash option (can't say for sure yet about KY or VA.) The top prize of $1000-a-week-for-life/$520,000 cash (if offered) will not be enough for winners to quit their jobs.
