I like PB because of the Powerplay option however when the jackpots get to the $300m range, I like MM because of the Cash Value that supercedes PB hands down. Just think, in 3 rolls of MM, we would have after taxes a cash value in the neighborhood of $300,000,000 take home. So they both have pro's and con's. I'm fortunate enough to live where I can play both.

abs.....i love powerball over mega m. i live 6 minutes from the border of connecticut...i have played mega.... for so long and crap...the 440 dollars i won last week in powerball,,,i put 188 back in mega this week and wow a whole 2.00. i hate mega....powerball has given me more money in the last 4 draws than mega in the last year.

I like both MM and PB as my vote. However, I don't play PB because CA doesn't have it. I don't play MM because the pending lawsuit that could make CA not play MM and/or jackpot isn't reached 300 million. I do play MM and PB for fantasy picks only.

I respect the posts of all members. We all have our reasons for posting messages. I appreciate those that sincerely try to give good information for the benefit of all. To me, it's very simple.

I prefer whichever, MM or PB, offers the bigger jackpot at a given point in time. So, my preference usually changes from time to time.

For me it's a no brainer.

Powerball 365 million = 175 million cash, 98 million after tax (including 9% income tax from Oregon)

Megamillions 365 million = 211 million cash, 137 million after tax (WA state - no income tax)

If Powerball were played in a state with no icome tax you would win 113 million or 24 million dollars less. To me 24 million is a lot of money so Megamillions is better.

The reason the white balls are included in the calculation of the odds of matching 0+1 is 0+1 represents matching the red ball ALONE for the $3 prize. There is a 1 in 42 chance you could match 0+1, 1+1, 2+1, 3+1, 4+1, or 5+1. If you match one or more white balls with the Powerball, you win some other prize, but not the $3 prize.

I subscribe to Chewies' idea. Whichever one I hit the grand prize on is the one I'll most *prefer*. I reside in a PB state yet I have no qualms in heading across the Dixie Line to play MM. :) Each game has given me about the same bang for the buck. Unfortuantely that bang is a dent in my purse

I play both, MM in Md. and I drive 5 minutes across the line into D.C. for PB. I like both for various different reasons, but PB's Powerplay helps me to win more money frequently.

Some think too many winners lower the jackpot amounts and prefer MegaMillions for that reason. I like them both. I play MegaMillions more because it's a local lottery but I'll make the two hours trip to Indiana when the PowerBall jackpot is $200M+.

I prefer powerball. Though I don't play it regularly cause I have to drive 4 and 1/2 hours to the nearest border to buy tickets. We have megamillions here in my state.

Powerball has produced more jackpot winners in recent years than megamillions.

2003 - 16 winners

2004 - 13 winners

2005 - 14 winners

I've only played the Powerplay three or four times, and that is the only realy difference to me. The ratio between cash and annuity, or the odds mean nothing to me - the other hundred million people don't matter when I win, or when I loose; they are just numbers. I am going to win or not win. Mega gives me a higher dollar value when I win.

Pardon my ignorance Cash Only, but I still don't get the math, or perhaps I don't fully understand how Powerball is played. If you have 42 powerballs, and they reside in a separate tumbler (my assuption), aren't the odds 1:42? How do the white balls have anything to do with how often the powerball occurs? This is confusing to me. Again, a math whiz I'm not

The 1:69 odds are for matching NO white balls, but matching the Powerball. Two different conditions (white balls and red ball) must be met.

I don't play either. I wish I can say I play them, but with the odds so high, I don't believe there is ANY system that can help you choose these numbers correctly. That being said, at 176M:1, I choose to put my money into the cash 5 which is a mere 658,000:1, and I haven't hit THAT yet.

If I wanted to play a higher odds game, I would go with the Pick 6. A few million is good enough for me

I play both but would prefer Powerball. I'm in a Mega Millions state and the Powerball odds are a mere 140,000,000 :1 as oppossed to Mega Million's 176,000,000:1.

A lot of peole don't realize these games are actually two lotteries in one, upper grid and lower grid. A lot of people also never repeat one of their five numbers in the upper as the lower number. Often when a huge jackpot is hit one of the same numbers from the five repeats as the Powerball or Mega number.
