Why would anyone in their right mind cash the tickets at the lottery office, unless the numbers are printed five at a time like new york and maybe some other states do?

I would cash 5 or 6 tickets at a supermarket, and just go around Florida looking for as many supermarkets until I was done. How will the IRS find out

Yes, you can claim losses (with proof) up to the amount you won for the year.

I guess were lucky in Canada we dont pay tax on lottery winnings.

I think its bull.

All the money that goes into lottery has been taxed once already by your hard work you do daily.

So to me its double dipping on the govts part.

At the risk of getting flames my way (I'm used to it!!), I will comment on this. I believe that you will find every penny of income you receive is to be reported to the IRS and your state (if your state has income tax). Below $600 there is not the Federal requirement that the Federal tax be withheld. The IRS has rules in place to make sure they get their money. He must have cashed them all at the same time. I'll bet he was taxed pretty heavy. I think I would have cashed them one a day or even two a day at different times. No tax below 600 bucks.
