The other day, I was pointing out to a friend a flock of tiny birds under the mulberry tree in my backyard. Without much thought, I blurted out, Look, birdlings! He looked at me quizzically, and repeated, Birdlings?

That is why I try to learn as much as I can, common American words and expressions.

I was about to start a new poll when this thread came up on the active topics. So, I may just as well ask my question here. This is a question that has been bugging me for sometime now.

My question is this: Can you tell, just from reading of one's posts, whether or not that poster's first language is English?

For me, I can tell most of the time, but not all the time. I can usually tell from the poster's choice of words and expressions, and from his sentence construction.

English is my first language but I spent a lot of time at my grandparent's house where Italian were spoken most of the time.

I kept emphasizing to those speaking Italian how important it was to learn English, but like an idiot I didn't pick up the Italian.

This really hit me when I was 18 and on a plane on the way to Viet Nam as an infantryman in the paratroopers when had I learned the Italian I might have been a translator.

With translators on the net I can write a lot of languages.

Yankee is my first language.

Took me two years to understand southerners.

They have a few local languages around Charleston S.C. area too.

Nothing like trying to understand someone with a mouthful of marbles.

I wouldn't know it if I were only looking at your posts. Some foreigners write better in English than people who were born and raised here.

English is my first and only language. Of course I took French and Spanish in high school and college like most students, but I soon forgot most of what I learned. But, having been married for forty years (yes, to the same woman) I have learned how to speak finger (including the dirty kind), hand, eyes, tone of voice, body language, and mood swing. I speak and write Bryanese.

It has it roots in English, but somewhere on the lonely backroads of Missouri it lost all structure and became intermingled with the language others know as Hick , forming the new language I attempt to communication with on a daily basis. It's not pretty, but it can be somewhat effective until I have to convince someone I actually know English too, then....things don't go so good. (I mean, well)<---I think?

I had 4 years of French from Middle to High School. I can't understand or speak a lick of it today. The fastest growing population is the Spanish speaking population, which I also don't understand.

English is the first and only language that I speak and plan to speak.(no offense intended).

There were advantages.

In that country a strong tradition existed for shaking hands with everyone you met, friend, stranger, or indifferent. Failure to extend a hand upon meeting someone amounted to a declaration of scorn, enmity, or intended insult. A form of language without words.

My granddad tended to scorn a lot of folks for reasons covering the full spectrum of human belief and conduct. He didn't believe it was right to openly insult them unless he got face-to-face with them, but... [ More ]

Well, early poll shows roughly 62% English is first language, and 38% not. Though not scientific, this percentage somewhat reflects the voting percentage in my neighborhood yesterday. English-speaking voters- 62%, non-english - 38%. Interesting.

I've answered 'Yes', but it ain't precisely true.

My first language was a patois of the sort they speak on the Llano Estacado of the Texas Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico.

I've noticed that members of LotteryPost come from far and wide: From Canada to China to the Bahamas, S.Korea, Ireland, Columbia, Singapore, the Philippines, India, Thailand, United Kingdom, Belguim, etc., etc., etc.

I am so curious. Who amongst the members speak English as their first language.

I am voting no. English is not my first language, nor my second. But English is my favorite language.
