Yes, Mike RJOh. Money makes people do some crazy things. I mean, there are documented cases where someone purposely gets hit by a car or falls down stairs to claim the insurance! So using a lottery ticket (or an imaginary one) to irritate or embarrass an ex wouldn't surprise me.

A year or so ago, there was a thread started by a women who had left her husband and moved to Florida from Illinois who claimed her husband made it known to her through friends and family that he won a MM jackpot but would rather see it go unclaimed than share it with her. There was also a case in Canada where a man tried to pull the same thing and he lost. I think if you win the lottery before you get divorced expect to give you spouse half or at least some.

So DvDiva is right. I wouldn't wait too long, because I'd be losing so much interest, but I never realized that taxes were due in the year the lottery was won.

Can you post a statement from the IRS that dictates this? I believe any prizes, including the lottery, are taxed when received. So if a person wins this week and decides to wait until Jan, he will pay 2007 taxes. I'm not 100% positive about this, by the way. Maybe the lottery is an exception, but a ticket is just a bearer instrument, not the actual money. This is what I copied from www.irs.gov regarding lottery taxation:

I think 1 year is enough. After that the prize should go into the prize pool as a bonus jackpot. As far as taxes go you would have to claim it during the tax year you won unless you win in December or so. At least in the US.

There was a guy here in S Ga that won the Lotto South and tried to hide it from his wife and divorce her. I believe they were separated at the time.

Well, when the divorce became final he had to split it with her and I support the Judge's decision on it one thousand percent .

This is one instance where the lack of anonimity actually helped .

She was entitled.....

Guesser, I agree! But there was once an article in the paper about a man who won the FL Lotto and was hiding out for a while until his divorce became final. He had to pay up anyway, although if they already agreed to separate started the legal paperwork, I don't see why.

Todd, we were just having fun! I don't think you idea is bad at all. I'm not sure where I'd begin to look. I haven't seen any trash cans behind stores, just dumpsters. How do you get the clerk or the manager to let you open up the trash can in the store? I assume you are talking about a receptacle with a swinging door that one sees in a store. Doesn't anyone stop you and ask what you're doing

I think yous guys are missing the point.First of all I do wear a glove I mean .......comon .Second I didnt say dumpster but trashcan.Look at the one inside the store where everyone scratches their tickets off I mean there is just a pile of tickets.Third if you want free money youve got to humble yourself.Fourth thats where all the unclaimed tickets accidentally go.I find 15-30 $$$ weekly.The most I found was a pick 4 for $100.Good Luck.

The legal limit to uncollected debts, claims, bancrupsies, etc. is 7 years. It s only fair the state waits that long since the money would go somewhere else anyways.....and they can collect interest in teh meantime.

Regarding a lottery ticket. diving into a dumpster is much different from rummaging through a trash can or two, although both of them would make me gag up my lunch. I have trouble using a public bathroom if it's stinky

I'd rummage thru trash anyday.

I stop at fast food dumpsters when breakfast hour is over and pick up breakfast.

We have quarterly dumpster diving contest in S.C.

Really? I think you might have a Convert here! Maybe I could handle a gag or two if it meant winning a few thousand..or more!! Everyday I spend about 9 hours listening to people talking about dirt. (I work for a cleaning company.) On a positive day I suppose you could say I listen to people talking about clean. (the half-empty/half-full philsophy)

There was an article not showing on here yet about a $2 scratch-off in Indiana that won a $5 prize. The winner missed the deadline because the game ended without their knowledge. They sued. The cost to the Hoosier Lottery is hundreds of thousands and the $5 winner is now ending up with $15K!

I'm so squeamish that I can't imagine sticking my hand into a trash can that isn't my own. However, I'm curious where you look for these cans. I see mostly dumpsters, not trash cans, outside of convenient stores and supermarkets. I know that a man in MA found a million $$$ winning ticket in the trash. I suppose you can always wear gloves, but rummaging through snotty tissues..I just don't know.

Everyday I find winning lottery tickets in the trashcan.Humble yourself and check a trashcan at one of your lottery retailers and you will see for yourself.Those million dollar tickets are long gone in the trash.People do not check their tickets good,or they have so many they accidentaly throw them away,I see them everyday.

When winning Florida Lotto or MegaMoney, although the winner has 6 months to claim the money, he only has 60 days to choose the lump sum. It is 60 days from the drawing, not when he claims the prize. I think they should change that rule. Even for someone who checks the numbers often, 2 months is little time to get your financial affairs in order. Personally, I'd want to give proper notice where I live and work and keep my secret until I got legal counseling and moved on, but I would feel rushe... [ More ]

I am leaning towards thinking that someone should have a few years to turn in their ticket to no time limit. It seems that if a ticket doesn't get turned in within a few years, the odds are it probably never will, but you never know. Someone could sift through some old documents are junk drawer and find a old winning ticket.

I voted no time limit.

It's funny you mentioned this because a couple of days ago in Florida, the 180 day limit was up on a ticket bought by someone worth 80 grand. They announced it on the news asking everyone to check their closets, wallets, couches and so on.

The person who bought the ticket probably loses his or her keys all the time.

We have read many articles here at LP where lottery tickets go unclaimed and I found an article where players in Austrailia have what appears to be an unlimited amount of time to claim their lottery winnings. This article says that officials are still looking for winners from 2001 (1 million) and 2004 (23.4 million). How much time do you think should someone be given to turn in a lottery ticket
