here's the big problem with the whole thing people get lottery machines to increase their business, not the lottery's business. They know they will have days when they either cant manage the lottery terminal or have to place an unfamiliar person on the terminal.

the lottery has no interest in the machines they do not place people behind them. So in essence they are getting a terminal operator for free.

I try to buy my tickets at stores that have two cashiers if at all possibe, and If there is someone with what appears to be a quick purchase coming up to check out, I will let them go before me . I try to be considerate, and the cashiers at my favorite store all know me and appreciate it.

I'm in NC and generally, each time I've gone into a gas station there have been two separate lines--one for lottery and scratch off ticket sales and one for general purchases, such as chips, snacks, gasoline, etc. I don't know how it is during late night hours, but in most cases during the day there are at least two cashiers behind the counter, especially on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when they know they'll be selling more tickets.

When the convient store I go to gets a line to long there is another person to help.

If people are a head of me buying whatever I wait in line and when I get to the counter the cashier prints up my tickets (P3 20 numbers) while the other clerk is waiting on the other customers

I have been treated unfairly with lottery purchases in the past so that is why I prefer to go to stores with experienced cashiers and those that promote lottery purchases. You can tell them because they usually display winning tickets at the counter or have two lottery machines and even offer to sell you quickpicks with your change. I totally agree. A customer is a customer. A retailer must realize that just because they only make a few cents on the dollar selling tickets, doesen't mean that the same customer isn't buying other stuff in the store, whether it was yesterday, a week ago or multiple times a week. They CANNOT make dumb decisions like that.

Funny how LP stays with us even when we're not on the site. Over the weekend I visited my Dad who is currently in a nursing facility about 150 miles from here. So I stopped to get gas and decided to buy my Lotto tickets there too. A man walked in to pay for gas and the clerk (who appeared to also be the owner) took care of him first. Anyone that owns a business will tell you that their business comes before the lottery machine. No retailer is going to dedicate an employee to running the machine unless that business generates enough profit to warrant a machine attendant. Lottery machine business in most cases is like 2 cents a ticket profit some don't make that. And they earn a paltry amount for cashing said tickets unless it's a jackpot winner. Notify the state lottery of this deal and they may just pull lottery sales out of that store.

Agree..

We are set up that way..

Lotto Scratchers or powerball players get ticked when they cannot leave the lotto line and get in the purchase line to buy tickets..

I tell them I cannot sell tickets at that register and when my line is clear, I move over to help the other girl.

Wonder why they think 10 people are in line at lotto and only two in line at merchandise line? duh.. They just don't get it..

There's an expression: Don't shoot the messenger. I agree that this clerk was way out of line, and writing or calling the manager might straighten her out, but please don't always blame the employee when you have a problem with a company!! I've had sales and customer service jobs where I had rules to follow and was ordered never to break them or else. I was about to ask about that very thing, because in that case it's definitely wrong, and I would have asked for the manager's number, and if the person was the manager, I would've asked for the regional manager. That just boils my blood.

I've learned that most of them don't have a clue on how to use the machine. The turnover rate at the retailers are so frequent, that they never get the right training.

Many convenience stores I've been in have two lines, one for gas, etc., the other for lottery. I don't mind waiting either since my piddly lottery purchase doesn't give them a profit margin other purchases do in order for them to keep the doors open.

Also sometimes liquor stores which sell lottery tickets do have the $$$ to cash your tickets so try there.

I guess I need to be more specific:

I purchased the lottery ticket earlier in the day. I stopped at the convenience store to redeem my winnings hours after I had purchased the ticket. I did not scratch the ticket while at the counter. I simply entered the store with the ticket in my hand got into line. There were two people ahead of me when I came in two more people came in immediately after me got in line behind me. You are absolutly correct. I usually play at one store that I call a little casino . It has 2 lottery terminals, 3 keno monitors and 4 slot machines,(for entertainment purposes only ). The cashier moves everybody out of the way for a keno player.

It is so much nicer to play there.

i was treated rude a couple times and i finally told the person if it bothers her that much to do a couple tickets then i'll call the tennessee lottery commission to come get the machine and she made nice quick.glad i play betslips now and thank goodness its easy........

Find a lottery agent that you like and has a lot of lottery players buying there and then only go there for your tickets. You'll enjoy the rapport with him and the other players you're standing in line with.

Establishments that cater to the lottery player tend to sell more winning tickets. I check out the pick-5 winners in our state and very rarely does a gas station sell the winning ticket. It's usually the mom-and-pop convenience or liquor stores.

Retailers receive only a small percentage from the sales of a winning lottery ticket or a winning scratchoff ticket. Clerks in my area are instructed to take care of the customer that are purchasing items that the store will profit more from first.

It kinda makes you feel, second class at first. But then when your on the other side, buying gas, and someone hands the cashier a slip with twenty numbers on it, and your running late for work, you then understand and appreciates where the cashier

I rarely go to 7-11 now, although I can walk to one. I've had too many problems with their lottery machine and the same cards seem to work just fine in other establishments. Regarding the payouts, once I won $5.50 (3 out of 6 in Lotto) and they expected me to buy 6 more tickets when I only wanted to buy 3. That once happened to me at another store. Yes, I believe this was a case of discrimination, and it has happened to me a few times when I'm waiting to purchase a ticket. That's why I avoid gas stations, although many people like to buy or redeem their tickets at them. I've been waiting at the lottery machine at a supermarket too and they'll handle a customer complaint first, even if I've been standing in line longer. They ignore the lottery customers in favor of the people buying slurppies and the like. What really burns me up about them is they take the money, and they usually cannot payoff anything more than $50.

Were I live in Oregon there are plenty of retailers for the Oregon lottery in driving distance. If the store refused my service I would find another retailer that would take the time to cash my winning ticket and then reward that store by being a repeat customer. I would also not go back to the store that told you to go to the back because it is clear that they do not want your business. If you have that little sign that says retailer for your state then cash my ticket or I will not come back... [ More ]

Once you bought your scratch-off tickets, your transaction was completed and the clerk was right to move on to the next customer in line. If you stepped aside to check your tickets then redeeming one of them was a new transaction which required you to go to the back of the line again even if the other customers in line were only buying lottery tickets too.

There's a learning curve for the clerks. The NC lotto is new, and he/she probably wasn't real familiar yet with how to redeem tickets. It probably would have held up the line. I wouldn't take it personal . The clerk is probably going to play the lotto also. If this same thing would happen six months from now, that would be a different story.

Start from the back again.

I have seen people buy scratchers and move to one side and scratch at the counter. They have a win they think they can buck the line.

the gas station is in buisness to sell gas. they act as an agent for the lottery. their primary responsibility is to take care of the cuctomers whom are getting gas or other purchases. Your situation in not unique. I know it dosen't seem fair that you should have to wait. but sometimes that's just they way it is.

Ive seen people scratching tickets and trying to push in front of people to cash or get more tickets to scratch at gas stations. Burns me up like they... [ More ]

That's not how it is where I live. It only takes a few seconds to scan a ticket and pay it out, I think you just ran into a rude clerk and if it was me I'd report that clerk to the manager.

I live in NC. My state just got the lottery so yesterday was my 1st time playing. I got a scratch-off ticket at a Texaco gas station. When I went to redeem my winnings (only $5) the clerk told me I had to wait in the back of the line while she waited on the people buying gas. Is this basic protocol where you live or was I discriminated against for being a lotto player
