I used to live in GA. in the eighties. We would drive to Dothan Alabama to the dog races; all in all it was fun bettin' on the dogs, but what I remember most vividly was, one time, around the 5th race, the crowd out on the paddock, down in front, getting stirred up and ducking down, 'cause some crazy across the track decided to discharge their firearm. Mike, c'mon...you know they do testing for performance enhancing products at the chihuahua races. I think Red Dog's on the list. You'd better check with the NCRA first. (The National Chihuahua Racing Association).

Besides, I think Skeeter could take them on his own accord. I'd bet on him.

i think what we're gonna do at this point is get a few of skeeters buddies around the hood all together in one spot.then we gonna charge two dollars to get into the festivities.next we will issue all of them sweaters with numbers on the outside of them where you can tell each one apart and bet on them.i'll then place my bets at the window for skeeter to win the race.right before he races i'll put some red dog energy drink in his water bowl and that should do the trick.once i've fleeced the nei... Good idea fxsterling.

They've a long tradition of a variation on that in rodeo in the southwest. Greased pig racing.

They cover a pig with bearing grease and turn him loose with a prize tied to his tail in one method. The other requires someone to actually catch the pig and carry it to a particular spot.

Usually all the men of a certain age in towns where they did it participated unless they could find a good excuse not to.

I was watching my cats chasing each other this morning. The trailer is usually no more than a length behind the leader and the lead changes regularly to keep a bettor interested. A little catnip got the race started.

Skeeter is a shoe-in to win the innaugural American Chihuahua Racing Championship next month in Memphis.

Hope he gets a middle post position so he can give all his competitors that evil red eye. They'll be running the opposite direction before the race starts.

I can tell you're a good breeder and trainer. There's no poop on the floor next to him.

Will betslips be carrying the action? I want to bet a quarter on that race. Keep us posted.

Back in the late '60s several young bucks I ran around with in Port Lavaca, Texas, and I were out at Hog Bayou or Green Lake .... messing around. We caught a 4 foot alligator, had nothing special in mind for it, so we tied it up, put it into a gunny sack and tossed it into the turtle of the car for later consideration.

There are turtle races but I don't think there's organized betting available. Another thing on the to-do list for Mike and Jimmy S.

When I put my turtles into the competition, they will have been well-fed, well-housed and in peak physical condition. No steroids either. Don't want my turtles getting into 'roid rage.

I agree. The high point of the thread was definitely LottoMike's innovation with the miniature dog races.

Seems to me there's a whole world to be explored with this to get people interested in new kinds of running competitions. Taylor, Texas, and Deming, New Mexico, already have duck races, which I think is a good launchpad for going beyond the ordinary.

Haven't been to a dog race in a lot of years.

Nearest thing I've gotten to a dog race most recently was when I ran in a lot of 10K human races until I destroyed my knees. The humans didn't appear to be any better at that than they are at anything else, though likely they thought they were better than dogs. They didn't let it show if they were.

Never tried racing dogs except once in Korea when doberman guard dawgs caught me coming back over the fence to the compound... [ More ]

Shooting a deer in a true pen is as illegal as it is despicable!

The moral issue among hunting moralizers comes up when a person chooses to personally kill something he's going to eat, as opposed to hiring someone to kill what he eats with a sledghammer in an abbatoir (honest labor, though I wouldn't choose it).

No one likes to hear about incidents of that type. Our news has similar strories about all kinds of animals other than greyhounds. Why single out greyhounds? These things are caused by individuals. The majority of pet owners treat their animals with love and proper care. That would include the ones involved with greyhound racing. People I've known who raised pit bulls for fighting who wouldn't lift a finger to do anything good for an animal if it weren't for their vested interest take care of them when it's to their advantage. Fighting pit bulls get plenty of exercise and training, running in runs, learning to kill other lesser dogs.

My feathers aren't ruffled, but I am tired. So maybe we should put this issue to rest. I don't mind discussing an issue like this, but when people disagree so strongly, it doesn't accomplish too much.

Also, many of the greyhounds are later sold to become family pets. It is not as gruesome as you make it out to be. There are veterinarians that check the dogs and there are State laws to protect them as well. Greyhound racing doesn't have the purses that Thoroughbred Racing does and doesn't... [ More ]

LottoMike, I've been thinking more about this idea of yours of racing miniature dogs on a small track.

I think it's a great one with a lot of possible variations.

For instance, I once saw a Yorkshire Terrier back out of a hole in the dam of a stocktank with his teeth locked into the arse end of a skunk. Ran backward maybe 50 yards, but never turned loose of that skunk until he just had to for the sake of trying to get some oxygen into his lungs.

How a breeder handles or abuses his dogs is his problem, not a problem of the sport. If you know someone abusing an animal report them to the anti-cruelty society. There are laws against it. A jockey just got suspended from racing for head butting a horse.

Some days you could race miniature Doberman Pincers against Chihuahuas, Pekinese, miniature Irish Wolfhounds. Make it a sort of nationalism thing. Irishmen chugging warm beer, yelling at big Teutonic Robert (Jaws, Battle of the Bulge) Shaw types, Zorro types, Charlie Chan types.

Maybe have flags of the various nations represented waving over the arena.... Red stars, swastikas, eagles killing rattlesnakes..... what? shamrocks?

Chihuahuas might make good racing dogs.

Smaller track, maybe 30 yards in diameter, done in a pit the way they do with fights.... small crowds holding up wads of bills at one another, swivel-arm in the middle of the track has a mouse on it for them to chase. You could do it where it's illegal, same as fights are done.

Price of maintenance on the dogs goes way down, tablespoon of food a day, a cup of water, a footlocker for each one to live in. No serious... [ More ]

i'm an animal lover too.i'm 31 years old and have had three chihuahuas in my whole lifetime.one lived till i was 13 and was killed by a pit bull which i then killed for doing that to my dog which i had to witness unfortunately in the act of tearing my dog to shreds that i grew up with my whole life.had another one that was around until i was 24 he got killed by a car when i let my mother keep him.the one i have now will be seven his next birthday and i learned my lesson from the first two incide... Keeping layer houses with 3/4 million chickens boxed three deep in 3x3x3' cages their whole lives, keeping dairy cows 10,000 to 5 acres of pen, using any creature they can catch as badly as they need to squeeze another nickle profit from it.

Only to protest them! I have a hard enough time walking down the street in this heat. Imagine running around a track in it. Dogs love to run and compete, and watching the agility races in comfortable, indoor stadiums is a real treat. These wonderful, loyal companions spend most of their lives in crates. When I lived in Millington I would attend the track in West Memphis, Arkansas. I enjoyed the dogs. They are the only form of gambling I did enjoy. When I go to Pensacola, I usually find one night to attend the dogs while there.

Haven't been to a track in almost two years. I do miss 'em.
