Thanks for the info- I lived there from 1977-'93. Mesquite, Pahrump, and Laughlin are popular day trip escapes . Boulder city is 'OK', but you can only go see Hoover Dam so many times.

The Community Activities link is 'nice' but when you live there and work 'in the business' you just don't get around to most of that kind of thing. There's 'two worlds', casino workers and everybody else. (In Laughlin there's three, casino workers, retirees, and bikers).

Vegas is like a neon island , pretty far removed from anything else. When you live there you look for half a day or one day trips, just for the sake of getting out of town for a day.

Mesquite NV room deal (call to verify). Mesquite is a little over a 1 hour drive northeast of Las Vegas on Interstate 15. Probably not available when NASCAR is at the LV Speedway. Powerball tickets can be purchased at Beaver Dam, Arizona (around 8 miles east).

Don't they have keno in casinos? That's a type of lottery..The lottery that pays the most money in the country, Nevada should have it (except multi-state games)...

Quite a bot of that business is Nevada resaidents buying California lottery tickets- they can gamble at home.

They would have to do a marketing project to see how many of those people go to casinos to gamble, for one thing.

But the major hitch will always be the profit. The casinos are in business to make money (scads of it) - and they can make relatively small change offering lotteries.

Why else would the Primm Valley Lotto Store on the CA/NV border be the number one lottery retailer in California?

Thanks JimmySand9. I didn't realize that was the number one lottery retailer in California.

Before that place went up, there was a store in a small town called Nipton, about 64 miles from Vegas. Word got out that you could go play the California lottery and people started flocking to the place.

When Primm opened I'm sure Nipton died out but it went pretty strong for awh... [ More ]

It's about location. If Portland Oregon were close to California then the #1 store could be in a hick store off I-5. As it is Portland or other Population centers are far away from California and the drive from Vegas to California is easy. The #1 store in Oregon is in Rainer Oregon population 500. It also is the closest store from all the population centers in western Washington.

But how many diehard lottery players are there in Nevada? You can bet that the casinos have checked that out, and discovered that there aren't enough of them to make anything but a small profit if they offered lotteries. And the casino and gambling industry is all about making HUGE profits, not small ones. Like any business, if you already have all the customers you can handle and are making 78% on those as profit, why would you bother to woo a small number of customers that you can only make... Yeah, this is true...and really tunnel vision on their part.

Many of the river boat casinos in the Midwest and South are owned by Nevada (and Atlantic City) companies. The boats do well, the states the boats are in with lotteires do well.

I don't think a lottery is any threat to the casinos - it's been mentioned in tis thread that every dollar spent on lotto isn't spent on a slot.

I have a friend who is a manager at one of the casino's there and he says that the state of nevada absolutely do not want a lottery in their state.

The way I understand it though, Powerbll sellers getting NOTHING from selling a losing ticket. And they only get a stipend if they sell a jackpt winner.

The profit to the casinos in selling a jackpot winner is going to be very seldom (remember the odds don't change just because you're a casino) And ever dollar that buys a Powerball ticket from a casino is one LESS dollar that goes into a slot machine. Its true that most states that are involved in MUSL do gain overall profits. Casinos though would only get less then 2% as the seller. Casinos have a higher margin for the games in house. In essence why lower their gain just for the 2%? Its not worth it from a revenue stand point. Nevada has its pockets lined by the gambling industry no one would dare to trade the silver spoon for chop sticks.

a lottery in nevada sure will be nice...Something like Win for Life or something...I am sure folks upthere will be happy...With a lottery it will surely make it the gambling region of the world...And yes, the progressive jackpot in the slots are just like a lottery...But i think that if Nevada had a lottery, LP would be more crowded, because all those gambling fanatics will end up here...Have you all seen on Tv the case of guys trying to break Las Vegas? It still surprises me that Nevada casinos don't want to sell Powerball. All that would be is more money for them.

I don't see how Nevada wopuld ever have a lottery. THe idea of having a lottery is for the state to make money from it. Nevada has no need for that, since they get so much money from the taxing of the casinos. That is why Nevada has no state income tax on its citizens. It already has the golden goose aka the casinos.

It's America. Therefore, its all about the money. That's the American Way.

The Mega-Millions slot machines were suppossed to be the answer to any Nevada 'lottery'.

They're all linked together so when anyone in any participating casino plays one, the progressive jackpot meter advances.

When they first put them in, it was weird seeing the meters advance at 3 a.m. without anyone near a slot machine.

If I remember right, every $1.25 advanced the jackpot $.01.

The closest thing Nevada has to a lottery is the Nevada Numbers game. And seeing that it's only played in casinos, I don't think it qualifies as a lottery in the normal sense of the word.
