Gee Justxploring, that is very reminsicent of that scene with Slim Pickens in Dr Stragelove.... $300, C-rations, a map, a pack of condoms....this ain't no survival kit, this is for a weekend in Vegas... lol

A little more on this driving thing. I live in a Mega Millions state (IL) that borders two Powerball states. My wfe has this friend that goes bonkers whnever the Powerball jackpot is up. He asks everyone he encounters on those days if they're going to Kentucky or Missouri.

The only times we ever went for Powerball was when the jackpot exceeded $200 million, which was rare at that time (pre-Pennsylvania). To be honest, the thrill is gone now that Powerball is so big. Anymore I've just been buying my set of numbers and my grandma's (despite the fact she lives in PA, she wants to win in DE because I don't want my name in the paper ).

I would never use a lot of gas to buy a lottery ticket. I buy them at the local stores or when I'm out of town. The only time I drove a little out of my way to buy tickets was when we lost power after Charley and Wilma. Even after the power was back up, the terminals weren't working so I drove about 5 miles. Probably would have gone further if they were down at Albertson's. So now I added another critical item to the bottom of my Hurricane Preparedness List:

Just a thought- this is the kind of thread that convinces me the state lottery commissions and the MUSL monitor this board.

For someone in the marketing aspect of the lottery this is data mining brought to them and served on a silver platter - not to mention anyone studying the psychological aspects of lotteries.

I can just see two schmegeggies sitting in alottery office somewhere and a conversation comes up about, How far do you think people would drive to play?

The last time we went in the beginning of October. We started to travel in mid morning and got back in the early part of the afternoon. The only time we had to slow down was for a small delay in roadside construction. We got lucky that the side of the interstate we were heading in was moving well. But the other side was crawling both when we went to Vancouver,Wa and on the way home to Eugene,Or.

I keep forgetting Eugene is that far away. I have to drive to Rainer, Oregon to get my Powerball tickets at 3 hours each way excluding traffic. For you I would avoid going in the afternoon since Portland's traffic is really bad.

I also rarely get tickets in Canada for 6/49 unless it breaks the 30 million mark. That's an all day affair with a ferry ride to get there.

My father used to make regular trips from Las Vegas to Baker, Ca., 93 miles one way, and play the Cal. Lotto

Then the little town of Nipton, Cal. got a lottery outlet, so a lot of Vegas people started going to Nipton, about 64 miles from Las Vegas.

Then Primm put another casino on the Nev. - Calif. border across the road from Whiskey Pete's, and the casino had a convenience store on the California side. Once they started selling lottery tickets, Nipton probably dried up. While it w... [ More ]

It takes me about 2 hours and 10 minutes to get to Vancouver, Wa from Eugene, Or. That is one way and it does not include delays in traffic. I get 5 weeks worth of Mega Millions tickets so I do not have to make the trip but once a month.-weshar75

So for those of us not familiar with the area, how many miles is that each way ?

The furthest I have gone was about 12 miles each way from my home to a neighboring state, until we got the PB also, in 1995.

Actually that is what got me hooked, for a short time. The first time I ever bought tickets was on my way to a dirt stock car race, we stopped at a place on the way there, I bought 5 quick-picks, and got money back on 4 of them......... the following week I spend like $75 on ticket... [ More ]

What is the furthest you ever traveled to buy lottery tickets? For me, it was the pre-Pennsylvania Powerball days when my dad and I would go from Northern Pennsylvania to Delaware to get tickets.
