Disagree! I won't go back to a store if the clerk asks me to share. The people in Publix never ask. In fact, many times I've offered to tip people who help me when they are doing their jobs and they decline. I've always been a good tipper (20% or more) at restaurants. When I was in better financial shape, I gave to several charities every month. But in my whole life I never tipped a clerk working in a convenient store.

When I bought my tickets from clerks yes I tipped them. Now we have our own version of on line where we open an account and purchase tickets. Winnings are placed in an ATM machine from which you draw them.

I don't see a problem with giving tips. Just because certain tickets are hitting doesn't mean that the next one is going to be a winner for the customer.

Any lottery player in Ohio can get on the Ohio Lottery web site, go the scratch offs section, and it will give a list of every scratch off currently being sold, and give detailed information of each ticket... how many were printed, how many of a certain prize were won, how many tickets of each prize there are, how many of a certain prize... At my favorite store, The cashiers that know me will tell me if there has been a significant hit on a particular game.

I see nothing wrong with that.

They do not steer me anywhere , even though I do tip from time to time.

I have certain games I like to play and I will buy them anyway.

Most everyone who come to LP are looking for a tip that might give them an edge. Some even claim to be winning more because of what they've learned but I wouldn't call that cheating.

If a clerk can tell when a roll of scarch-offs might be due to payout a big prize then the lottery isn't doing a good job of printing the winning tickets in a random fashion. I doubt is a clerk would have that kind of information and still be working as a clerk instead of the owner.

I have been reading this thread from the begining and it is interesting to hear everyones views. I also know that I buy a lot of scratchers I have won a lot and lost a lot.I also know from helping out at my friends store that no one knows what is on a roll of scratchers. Here is the thing about what you are saying. When you go into a store that sells lottery just like in the game of baseball the pitcher is trying to get you out. But if you are coaching the players into playing one ticket over another you are throwing the game. IE Kenny Rogers and his Dirt which we all know was pine tar on his hand. At the point of sell like it or not you are giving your tippers an unfair advantage over the rest of the lottery players and why? Well because it benefits you.

Scratchers..

What this means: The clerk is seeing what is bought and what has been scratched in store. They may know if a roll hasn't been hit for like 7-10 tickets..

Gambling is an art... You play against the trend.. Example... Some people will not play a roll that hasn't had a winner in 10 tickets.. They consider the Roll cold.. Another person will play it because they think it is due to hit..

I think that's why this conversation has taken its current direction. Scratch-off ticket lottery players are wondering what this means and have questions about this. Perhaps the original statement was to intend that a clerk could steer a player to a hot roll . Nothing wrong with that.

The question that comes into play is the original statement that Tippers win more than non-tippers .

A clerk cannot guarantee a winner in a book.. That is ridiculous........ It is not cheating, to expect a hit.. No more than it is cheating telling someone you feel that trip 4's are coming ...

I have to agree somewhat. This practice leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I know for a fact they don't do it at my store. The only question that they answer is What's the most popular game(s)? They don't know if there is a winner due on a roll and aren't going to claim so. (Anyone that does is a BS'er).

And in my 8 years of playing the lottery I've never seen anyone tip the cashier for a winning scratch-off ticket.

I think clerks who give out tips on scratch-offs should be fired and they should not be allowed to purchase scratch-offs from the store they work. It makes it a tampered with game for others. It's not fair and it's cheating. The clerks and the people who tip them get the winning tickets. That's why I don't buy scratch-offs. They get stepped on.

We have some players who never tip. We don't lead them to the tickets that are due to hit if they ask.. We just let them pick their own. If they pick the roll..

I know the clerks down here in MO just watch to see if it has paid a big winner. There is usually a few nice ticket in every book. So, if you have sold half a book and you haven't had any nice winners. The odds have just become higher of getting a nice hit. The fewer the hits in between the better your chances of getting it. Of course, this is if most of your customers scratch at the store, otherwise it would be much harder.

I have never tipped a clerk at a store that I have bought lottery at in the 10 years that I have played. I have been asked on occasion to let them get a tip if I win. I always laugh. I have listened to clerks tell me that this ticket or that ticket is do to hit and they have always gotten me to buy losing scratch-its. In Georgia...I have noticed that ODD number tickets tend to hit more frequently then Even number tickets.

So if a ticket is an even number, I will not buy it.

Doesn't work out everytime, but at a few stores, it seems to work really well.

A group of regulars came in tonight for a round of fun before filling out their PB tickets..

I live just north of the mason dixon line and also don't get the animosity with clerks. I agree there are incorrigibles out there but they are small percentage. In any sample of people, clerks, waiters, repairmen, police, doctors, govt. workers, etc. there are jerkys but most are normal. I figure, if you are polite, it usually gets returned, if not, no biggie. There are people who carry a chip on their shoulders, it never gets them far, and they can't figure it out. People go out and buy, cigarettes, booze, and liquor themselves. The clerk dosn't come knocking on peoples door with a sales pitch to sell people those things. I have decided to keep things simple and just not win. This way any issues of tipping become irrelevant.

I think the only way I would tip would be if the clerk corrects a mistake or somehow creates a winning mistake ticket. Other than that they are just doing their job.

My wife hit $200 on a scratcher at a convenience store and she tipped the clerk $10.

The one pick 3 we've hit for $290, we tried to tip (grocery store) and the clerk said she couldn't accept it.

Sometimes if there's a large jackpot I play a ticket, and then play it again for the clerk- so someone else is 'rooting for' the same numbers! - did that once in Indiana on Powerball, hit 4 of 6 so we both won $110 - not a bad tip for a buck

I went into the store last night and got my plays. Comes to $7.50. The cashier said $4.50. I said whoa that sale is $7.50. The error was corrected.

If the cashier has to make up shortage on their shift I saved her $3.00.

Thanks Tntea, these girls were great with my scratchoffs and cash3 and 4.I have found a new store where the people are just as great, one thing I have noticed usually if I am nice and friendly they tend to be the same, I also verbally thank them, I know they spend a lot of time with me on this, also great to tell me if someone has just hit big on a ticket.

I agree.. Been on both sides of the counter...

I tip....... Golden Rule here... One most do not apply in life.. and for those who do.. happiness fills their everyday. For those who don't.. well I wouldn't walk their shoes for all the money the lottery can provide..

I have never given tips to lottery retailers because I fill out my own play slips. I do not think they need a tip. If I could I would run the tickets myself through the machine. I do tip in other places like car washes, casinos, restaurants. I give tips based on how well I am treated and if they go out of there way or are just doing a good job then they deserve a tip. When I buy lottery I go in with a set amount and I do not spend more than that.-weshar75

When it is my regular store anything I win over 500.00 I always give them money or take them lunch or breakfast.

I have won several big ticket scratch offs at one store, and the girls always knew if I won they won.I don't use this store any longer because the owner ,I feel, insulted me. I did tell the girls there what happened and why I would not be back there anymore, and they were not pleased, however when the owner and not an employee is the one doing the insulting, you have no recourse, o... I voted yes. I always tip the clerk who put in my numbers/slips when I win, not just any clerk behind the counter. Mainly because I usually have so many numbers its like a job for them to get it right without making any mistakes ... that alone deserves a tip
