I just finished installing the expanded version of this technique, which also delays loading external images posted to message content and signatures. It's pretty cool being able to gain control of the page (for example, scrolling down the page), while the huge external images continue loaded in the background.

(As explained earlier, external images are images store on non-Lottery Post servers - for example, on free image storage web sites, which are notoriously sloooooow.

I didn't know that some people's posts loaded more slowly than others.. hmmm...

Just didn't play attention, or this computer here works out the kinks for me..

I know what you mean. Even with my hyped-up cable modem things were going painfully slow on some threads, and I figured out that some of the images linked to other web servers ( free image servers ) were the culprit.

I'm really happy with the way this technique gets the page loaded quickly, and then if it takes extra time to load a few images after that, who cares, at least you can immediately start to work with the page.

I got so I would not even open a thread by user name or an ongoing thread that loaded slow.

They loaded slower than molasses in January.

By the way, next up is to take this one step further, and to apply the same technique to images posted in forum posts and signatures.

I'm finding that people are choosing to host their images in some pretty slow places, and unfortunately it makes Lottery Post look very slow -- but it's really that other slow image site that's killing performance.

I just implemented a very cool enhancement to all the forum pages, which speeds up the loading of the pages greatly.

The enhancement delays the loading of avatar images not hosted on the Lottery Post web server ( external avatars ) until after the page finishes loading the basic framework.

Some members use avatars that are hosted on free image servers (i.e., slow servers), and every page such a member posted on would take a long time to load and appear to be stuck , as the page attempted
