What do you consider a 'large jackpot' ???

My state's 'large jackpot' is AT MOST $200,000, and is USUALLY around $75,000 - hardly worth having to go underground with, I would not consider that 'small' amount to be worth the trouble of trying to remain anonymous, I mean, why ?

And what about the posting from someone saying they would travel to another state to buy tickets JUST to remain anonymous ?

Real concerns, you can't that much money on you for free. There are guys out ready to share (snatch) everything at all cost.

Something tells me, the war on terror may place a winner an FBI/CIA list.

Where you spend or take the money matters.

Had I not read the names on Lottery Post, I would only know there was a winner in Georgia and New Jersey. If the winner is from Ohio I can find out which store in which city sold the ticket on their website. Two out of the four $1 million winners in the Labor Day Raffle formed a trust but the Lottery Commission published where the tickets were sold.

The local news media will want an interview with a large jackpot winner but I doubt after asking the usual questions they would follow them aroun... [ More ]

rundown99...regarding your comments about claiming as a trust through lawyers, I understand your concern. If able to claim a prize that way, I would think there would be a manner to establish the trust where you, the winner, are a trustee in control of the funds and the attorney acts at your direction. You can be certain these would be the type of questions I would get answers to before establishing the trust. If I didn't like the answer I would get a second opinion just to be sure.

This brings an interesting question:

What exactly would be the difference between claiming a prize in person as an unknown (KS, ND, DE, SC, and MD) and having an attorney claim the prize at the lottery headquarters for you (LA, NH, OK, and OH)?

It seems to me that you would have more control over the prize if you claim the prize in person as an unknown (KS, ND, DE, SC, MD) rather than if someone had power of attorney and administrative rights of the prize (LA, NH, OK, PA, OH). I... [ More ]

rundown...here is the update on PA. You can claim as a trust, but it looks like the trust owners will be identified. That what what happened with the LTS Trust who won in Decmebr of 2004. (I think this same policy is used by Massachusetts.)

Therefore it does not look like PA is a state where you can remain unknown.

I think when the recent MM jackpot hit $390M a lot of people started playing the game and thinking about what to do if they won. Now that both MM and PB jackpots are less than $100M those people probably aren't playing or concern about being anonymous if they win less than $100M. Hopefully they will have all that settled by the time either of those jackpot roll to $250M+ again and be really to just play the games.

I don't know if Pennsylvania allows anonymity through a blind trust. It's obvious that the other states allow anonymity, because of the numerous anonymous claimants from those states in the past.

guesser...it might be good for you to retrace your steps in this thread. When amsoly41 mentioned there were 10 states that allowed anonymity there was no mention of it just being for Powerball. You narrowed it down to Powerball. In order to get the true picture it would be best to include other states beyond those that offer Powerball.

America is the land of opportunity, and every opportunity I have to capitalize on my lottery win, I will take it. I think people are too paranoid with this anonymity thing...everyone knows that most all celebrities, pro athletes, and top level business people are wealthy...those who run into trouble are those who 1) went looking for it (why frequent a night club at 1 AM when u know there are drunk people and opportunistic people all around...don't even start with the strip clubs and guns), 2) didn't surround themselves with a trusted team of legal, investment, and tax advisors, and 3) those who put out the... If you go to the Powerball website and research it as I said, here it is verbatim:

CAN I REMAIN ANONYMOUS WHEN I HIT THE JACKPOT? All but three states (DE, KS, ND) have laws that require the lottery to release the name and city of residence to anyone who asks. One state (SC) will keep your name secret if you request it, but if someone files a Freedom of Information Act request, you may have to file a plea with the judge to deny it. Photos and press conferences are always up to you.

No, they would not be fully culpable, or culpable in any way, because nobody is forcing anyone to play: you know the rules or you don't play.

Casinos win 97% of the time - I know this - I don't go to casinos - my choice.

Lottery - I know the odds, and I know if I win I will be publicized, and I vote to play.

My choice, my business, my 'problem', if I should ever be so lucky as to have to worry about it.

You need to do more research on where you can play PB and remain anonymous:

The big question is why no anonymity. There isn't a valid reason why winners should be made public if they choose not to be. It will only be a matter of time before a winner is told they can't be anonymous and then something bad happens to them. The lottery at that point would be fully culpable.

It has not slowed down the sales in these states

In fact I will travel to one of these states just for the opportunity to stay anonymous.

even though I would have to pay more taxes.

I would rather have the opportunity to stay anonymous over the tax rate.

If all the winners were anonymous, the news agencies would never 'cover' it anymore, and ticket sales would plunge. More people buy tickets when they see on the TV News or hear on the Radio News that the jackpot is 150 mill or more - especially when it gets over 200 mill.

They won't publicize it on the news if they can't publicize the winner: kinda imagine all the publicity leading up to the Daytona 500, seeing it in the news every day, but you are forbidden to release any results after... [ More ]

IF they allowed winners to remain anonymous, I GUARANTEE YOU that all of you would start asking questions after the 10th, 15th, 20th, etc. lottery winners went unannounced.

Someone wins 360 mill, and nobody knows who.

Someone wins 400 mill, and nobody knows.

Several people win several 150 mill jackpots over the course of 2-3 years, and nobody knows who, I KNOW people will start asking questions, and don't even try to say you would not be wondering yourselves.

Guesser...before you spout off that someone (presumably from the Maine Lottery) should be fired why don't you get all the facts! There was no check with all of his information on it. When a newspaper photographer visiting the winner's house asked for something to go in the picture the winner held up his ticket and the winning claim form with the information on it. In essance the winner voluntered this information. BTW all of this information is in the News Story posted by Todd.

I KNEW as soon as I saw the story about them printing the guy's info that THIS would be the topic most would refer to... and I clearly agree that whoever made up the check with all the info should be fired, that won't solve the guy's possible grief. That said, I don't see a problem with a guy holding up a fake check with his name and the dollar amount on it, I DO see a problem with anything else besides those two things on it, that's a big-time screwup I am sure we all agree on - even me.... Just wondering: it seems nearly every posting/forum now has people voicing concerns or wishes to remain anonymous.

Did something happen to a Jackpot winner ?

Are there reports of prior things happening ?

What has spooked 'everyone' ?

It just seems odd to me we've had this 'anonymous' explosion over the last 3-4 weeks, where it was seldom discussed prior to that.
