I would blow about 3% of it on some things I want.

That said, this economy scares the hell out of me, not everyone is 100% assured of having a job a year or two from now, let alone having a 'retirement' in the years to come. So I would spend a VERY SMALL amount, and I'd bank the other 97%, and even at that, I'd probably have 20% of it hidden under my mattress where nobody would ever look for it (sic).

Why do you have to spend it? You can invest it and make 5% a year easily enough. That's a gross (pretax) revenue of $50,000 / year from it. Then you can do what you want....work part time, don't work, whatever. No bills, and an easy-going lifestyle, and you never touch the priciple.

It's obvious that many of the answers are influenced by the age of the member and his or her current lifestyle. (BTW, I'm not criticizing or passing judgment - just an observation.)

Although I'd rather have much more so I could give it away, a million dollars tax free is a lot of money. Most people who are financially well-off don't actually have a million dollars in cash, but might have a total net worth of over a million, including real estate, a business or retirement savings.

If I won a million dollars, it really wouldn't change me too much. Maybe a car and move out of my parents' house.

Now if it were millions of dollars (I mean BIG money), I would help some friends out (I help those who help others.) a little. First I would divide the money by ten years, that would leave me with a hundred thousand a year for ten years. The rest, at this point would be nine hundred thousand, I would put in CDs bills (are whatever they are called). The interest, I would but in a separate account or CD. Each year I would cash one in. 350K for a few acres and a very modest home

50K to furnish it and probably do a little landscaping (privacy fence/hedge )

25K for medical stuff

25K to take a friend to Europe for a month

25K for a new car

25K to charity

550K to invest (remainder of the million + 50k from selling my current home)

So even if I just put the 550K into a 5% passbook savings, I'll have an extra 27K per year. I would be extremely happy with that.

This is much simpler than what would you do with a billion dollars?

(1) Leave this area, buy a cozy home furniture

(2) take care of some medical needs

(3) pay off debts

(4) help my sister

(5) give some money to a favorite charity

(6) put the rest away for retirement

So much has to do with where a person lives. If you don't already have a house, buying one in many places would use up most of the million. I'm not talking about a luxury home on the beach either.... [ More ]

I'd first buy a porsche. Then I would start an aggressive advertising campaign on the best direct sales products on the internet. Probably in the healthcare industry. In the past 15 years, the vitamin, nutritional, and basic health conscience industry has exploded exponentially.

On the other hand, I might just blow it all on expensive guitars, equipment, a studio and write songs hoping atleast one of them would be a one hit wonder.

Help my sister with some cash.
