I'd rather be rich than poor. I'm between jobs now and I have bill collectors calling my house and sending me letters. So yes, I think a lottery win would be pretty beneficial. Small wins are allright, but not enough.

As I am sure other people are in the same situation and they need and want a good win as well

YES YES YES as long as you have a head on your shoulders because people who are rich and unhappy all the time are not to smart.This is barring any health related problems.

Last summer I went to St Tropez,France..They call this place the playground of the rich,but whenever I saw these super rich people step off their mega yachts I never noticed,not once,any of these super rich folk smile or laugh.Whats wrong with these people

Whatever, and I do know the difference between 'poverty' and 'going without', some of your scenario is 'homeless', which is beyond 'poverty', but I know what you mean.

The reference to my stereo purchase was just a 'higher-end' example, and wasn't really intended to be compared to poverty, but rather to appreciate what you have, when you had little.

I could tell more stories if you like...

Not exactly poverty but when I was in the Army, when I knew I was getting out, I was a SSG at Ft Ord, Ca. (Monterey).

I had some stripes, I was E-6 and E-9 is as high as it goes, I had over 10 years service (years of service go towards determining pay rates) and once a month, on payday, we went to the local Shakey's pizzareia for our monthly out. That was it for the month.

I kinda disagree.

Povery can indirectly buy you happiness, because once you are no longer impoverished, (hopefully) you remember what it was like, you cherish what you have now vs. when you had nothing.

I remember 30+ years ago, buying my first stereo - I could not afford it so I bought it on 'lay away' - every week I'd show up at the stereo store and put $10 or $20 towards it, and after 6 months I was able to take it home. Rich problems - I've never been there either but I really doubt I'd have any problems deciding where to go on vacation, what car(s) to drive, my home, or anything like that. If I buy something I don't like, I'd have enough money to just go trade it in for something else. No problem at all. Maybe rich problems would be

It is true that you can be miserable with a lot of money, but then again, if you did

Money seems to be an amplifier of whatever is present already in a person's life, happiness or unhappiness. Add money and it's as if all life issues (good or bad) are placed under a magnifying glass ... effects multiplied exponentially.

Just because people know that more money can't make them happy doesn't mean that they don't also know that less money could make them less happy.

Money can solve some problems, but not all problems. If the problems that are keeping you from being happy are all problems that can be solved by money, then money can buy you happiness. I doubt that many people are in that position, though.

Moneycan buy happiness for me. Notice I said for me. One example is being able to pay for my kids college education, room and board, give them a car to drive, etc. Thats makes me happy as can be. Not being able to provide things such as these would not make me unhappy, but I would be worried about whether or not they would be able to get scholarships etc. Oh, yeah, one more example.

Totally agree with the free time being the thing that gets you happy! You only live once, and you spend most of your adult life making someone else rich (be it a sole owner of a company or a room full of shareholders). I have a whole budget worked out that insures time rather than big ticket purchases. It's all based on the base JP of powerball so anything more is icing

My opinion on this is yes to a degree. Lots of things make people happy, spending a weekend at my Moms with my brothers and sisters and all the nieces and nephews, playing cards and swimming, makes me happy, however if I don't have the money to buy the car, gas etc to get there I missed out on the happiness, so money allowed me to be involved in that precious time. I think money is such an important part of allowing people what they need to be happy.

I don't see what you are disgreeing with, Guesser. I never said that you can't be happy with the cheapest car, computer, TV. But you still need money to insure that car and, even if you are a mechanic, you need money for parts and tires, oil, gasoline. I know a lot of people who don't even own a computer and they don't have cable TV and they don't even drive a car. So what? You don't think they'd want to win the lottery? I totally disagree.

I know people that are perfectly content with buying the cheapest car, computer, TV, whatever, and using it until it blows up. They are content.

On the other hand, I know folks that get a new computer twice a year, trade in cars once a year (or sooner), and buy new big-screen TV's as soon as the next 'latest and greatest' comes out.

Nothing guarantees anything. However, is it not suspicious that people who are wealthy do not wish to be poor, even though they can easily give it all away and become so.....? Therefore, being wealthy must be a good thing. No one is running away from it.

You can be rich, or middle income, or dirt poor, and be happy OR unhappy, it's all about what makes you happy.

You can be in Vegas with a couple of million dollars and a few hookers, and be happy (or not), or you can live in the middle of nowhere in complete quiet and solitude, and be happy. Or not. It depends on what makes you happy.

Money never guarantees happiness. Look at all the celebrities who commit suicide or have drug problems, marital problems, etc. However, as I said on the other thread (which is very similar to this one) it gives you choices. I'm not looking for more free time. When I'm not working I often have too much free time, so I like to keep busy. However, like you wrote, you could spend it doing things you enjoy that cost money like traveling.
