This reminds me of a well known expression:

No good deed goes unpunished. Clare Booth Luce

We all know what is in our hearts and more than often, what a person decides is the just moral thing to do is often very subjective. Often the final decision is between him, his spiritual counselor and God.

The Law is something entirely different. Although it's supposed to be designed by men women of moral fortitude, I admit there's lots of room for improvement. (not $40 million, but...)

Iraq Vet Finds Winning Lottery Ticket

A U.S. soldier and his girlfriend found a winning lottery ticket on the ground at a convenience store Monday and turned it in to police, who were able to find its owner - a $2,500 winner with no idea her lucky ticket was missing.

Sgt. But if it is signed, it shows ownership and that makes it different in my opinon. Right or wrong. That is my opinion and how I would handle the situation. But I wouldn't touch the signed ticket with a 17 foot pole, unless you wanted a finder's fee, like it has been said here in the last posts

They call this the land of opportunity. You can recover someone's winning ticket and reap the rewards without guilt in my opinion.

???

I don't understand this poll. This really has nothing to do with ethics at all. I don't think you have much of a choice in this case. You cannot cash the ticket if someone else's name is on the back of it. When you walk into the Lottery Office, they will ask for 2 forms of ID including a photo ID (driver's license, passport) and your social security number. So whoever chooses this answer is admitting to Identity Theft!

Second, if there is any suspicious activity, the Lottery Of... [ More ]

Obviously the right thing to do would be return the ticket to the owner but not to expect

a reward is ridiculous. I'd almost be in negotiating mode with the owner, but not to that extent

I wouldnt be greedy but whatever we agreed upon would have to be notorized and approved

by legal counsel. We'd have plenty of time to come up with something fair, say 1%. The odds of

finding a winning lottery ticket of that magnitude has to be in the ballpark of winning the

game itself if not... [ More ]

I agree with the above answer if there is an owners name, I would try to find them , I'm sure they would offer you a nice reward, but some people wouldnot, I trust if that was the case something even better would come to me down the road.

If there is no name, and I have no clue that is a different story.

I agree!

I do beleive if the persons name is on the back you can't cash it anyways without identification... so if your not him, your not getting it anyways.... at least up here in Canada I think its that way. I know they asked me for a piece of i.d. when I cashed a $1300 ticket... 40 million... definately.

I didn't vote, but I would do my best to get it back to it's rightful owner. I'm a firm believer of karma- what you put out will definitely come back in some way, shape or form. I'd let it be up to the true winner if it was worth giving me a cut. If it turns out the winner decides not to, I know I will get my blessing some other way. I'm not saying it would be easy to do...give up $40M that could change my life for the better. But time has just shown me that when you do right, it comes back... [ More ]

I would have to vote none of the above. If there is a name on the back of that ticket, I would try to locate the owner. I don't need bad karma. I wouldn't ask for a finders fee. If the owner is a decent person he/she should have no problem offering a finders fee...I know if I was the owner of that ticket I would GLADLY offer a finders fee.
