So, you leave a Scratched-Off Winning Ticket (Value $5), and thinking it was a Joke it goes out with the Trash. Maybe a Note should accompany theTicket: Thanking Her for Her fine service and explain that the Scratch-Off is Real and that you have left it in place of Cash.

I used to do that when I went to Vegas. I think they probably end up with more money that way, because someone who is gambling will have a tendency to toss a chip with a higher denomination, especially when he's winning, faster than real money.

I would never leave a scratch ticket for a waitress. I think it would be confusing, not only because of a possible gag, but she wouldn't know if you left it on purpose or accidentally dropped it.

If I'm ever in a CA eatery and my waitress has a lottolaughs tag, I'll be sure to leave her a good (all cash) tip.

A few years ago, I ate at a place where my waitress had TROUBLEMAKER as her name tag.

Well, you can imagine the rest...

With more fraud and joke tickets these days, people receiving one might be more skeptical.

OMG,I forgot about those joke tickets,you're right! I saw some for sale on an online novelty shop when I was looking for a whoppee cushion. They look just like the real thing!

Sorry if I sounded so defensive,timetreat. Even though I haven't done that work for years, it still sticks in my craw how cheap people were even when you give great service. Guess I still have a lot of unspent anger towa... [ More ]

I would not leave a winning scratch ticket as a tip in a restaurant , but I will leave a dollar token and / or gaming chip in a casino for the dealer or the c-tail waitress...

Well, I wasn't trying to step on any toes.

What made me think of this was the number of times (years ago when I bought scratchers) that I had used them to buy gas. To me a winning scratcher spent the same, just in fewer places.

I'm sorry, I didn't see that either, a winning scratchoff. Of course that would be better then an unscratched ticket but better yet would be cash,period. That's all a waitress wants to see left behind. Knowing some of the dimwits I worked with,even if it WAS a winner they might wind up throwing it out anyways without even looking at it,thinking it was a joke.

Oops, I just saw the word winning in front of scratch ticket on your question. I think the scratch ticket that was left at the table was un-scratched. Now that would be an interesting tip. However, I can't see leaving only a scratch ticket on the table.

I believe I recall posting a news story years ago about just such a case -- where the waitress won. There may have even been some legal wrangling afterwards.

If someone had ever left me a scratchoff for a tip while I was waitressing, I would've been P.O.'ed big time. We worked hard for our money, just as they do now. This would not be very amusing to most, I would assume. Unless it was a big winner, of course, but the odds of that happening are just about zilch. Believe me, they just want the money. I've never met a rich waitress yet.
