My husband and I both tip the clerk when we win on the lottery, lotto or scratch-offs regardless if we bought the winning ticket from this particular store or not. We tip 10% of the winnings when we hit straight.

When I win I tip my clerk. I've got (2) stores that I like to buy my tickets for 2reasons:1. they will let me call my numbers in and pay later and 2. for the social. They are really nice people at both stores so which ever one i win in that is the clerk i tip. At one store the owner will buy a scratch off and let me scratch it and give me half if it is a winner. He has given me tickets for my birthday and anniversary.

As I already wrote, I've never won a lot of money, not even $100. However, if I did and used $20 to buy pet food for the Humane Society, why would I be any less generous than a person who tipped a clerk $10? I thought the subject matter was a good one, but it wasn't specifically about generosity, but about personal habits.

I am a tipper myself and sometimes for no reason other than I just feel like it.

In fact, I cashed some tickets today and I gave the clerk a $5 just because I wanted to. It might make them feel good but I assure you I come away feeling like I might have brightened someone's day and what's wrong with that

Consider that you live where the masses cause the politicians to run for cover when gasoline gets $3-$4-$5 dollars per gallon, but people will calmly pay $20-$30 for a 20 ml ink cartrige. That's $3800.00 ~ $5700 per gallon.

In general, most people do not handle(compute) very large or very small numbers well.

I forgot to add, that this clerk had a similar trait whenever I ask him for plastic bag. He kinda messes with me and says no. But that got so old, and he still uses that bit.

I would still give him a tip despite everything i said, just for the mere fact that he lost his voice, and that I really shouldn't complain so much about every little detail of every little thing that happens. I think there is some truth you say about pushing buttons. He kinda reminds me of my late uncle.

As far back when I was only about 4 or 5 years old, in Iran, my uncle would test my knowledge, but in a good way. He started this never ending scenario about the elephant and ant story. Clerks are expected to run lottery tickets, charge the correct price and give the correct change which is usually figured by the cash register when they put in the correct information. If he understood enough math to figure the odds of the games himself even with a calculator, he probably wouldn't have been a clerk that long unless he owned the business. There's one clerk who won't get a tip unless he wises up a little...lol.

I just stopped at the liquor store where I get my tickets just about everyday. The clerk is a very nice gentlemen who lost his vocal chords and uses one of those devices that one puts by his throat to speak.

If a Celeberty lends the Celeb Status to a Cause to make people aware of that Cause that is cool. Because it is a valid way of making people aware of a Cause. However when that same celeb starts talking about what they personally donated Dollar wise..... that's not cool..... it's tacky!!!!

I prefer to buy in other areas than where I live because it's a very small community. IE everyone knows everyone else. So you'd not even get a chance to catch your breath winning huge on a ticket here. There is one gas station that sells lottery tickets the nearest other one is 20 miles away and the next one is about 45 miles away. During the summer when tourist are here it might not be that big of issue winning cos they might think it's just a tourist winning. Niether my wife or I could quit... [ More ]

You've got to be kidding.

If where you buy the tickets matters, you're either playing QPs or very superstitious. But if you're only buying QPs, there is nothing a clerk could do deserving of a tip so there is no reason to tip unless you consider the clerk part of your hope I get lucky process.

I really can't answer if I 'have' tipped... because I've never won more than a few bucks. If I won BIG though, I would definitely tip mine but only because I've been going there for so many years (even before the lotto here). There are only a few of them so I would give the max. amount for a gift (8-10k?). I also hope that the lady who owns it would split the sell bonus money with them too.

Aaaghh Nope! This is NOT a service job like waitresses, bellhops, etc. have. Besides, the store should tip their employees when they win for selling the big one(s). Do you tip the clerks for buting soda at their stores? I say sodas because sometimes they have winning prizes from another free soda to many dollars. Just my opinion.

Lottery clerks are not paid anything much, so there is nothing wrong with tipping if your heart allows you to, or better still you can bless someone in need, that is what I do.

I buy my lottery tickets at different places because I don't want a relationship with the clerks, they are there to do a job not be my friend.

Their jobs are low pay so they probably would appreciate a tip but I only tip at places where tips are part of the pay such as a set-down restaurant, sorry McDonald and Burger King aren't included.

Several years ago I won $100 on the powerball. When I went to cash it in, the clerk told me that her customers usually tip her, so she was going to give me $80 to make it easy. Sheesh! I told her I'd been playing for years and even with this win I was $1000's in the hole. She begrudgingly gave me the whole $100. I developed a relationship with the clerks at the store that I buy my tickets at and they always go that extra mile for me.

like if I have a big stack of tickets to check they will check them.

or if I am in a hurry they will run my numbers for me.

or I can drop them off and come back and they will be done.

I also know I can call them and they will take numbers over the phone.some stores say you have to come in.

Besides, I do most of the operating of the lottery machine here when buying or redeeming my tickets! But when I go to Maryland or NJ to buy my MM tickets I can't run my own cards through the machine. To me it doesn't matter if I had a big win or not, I don't tip the person behind the counter when playing the lottery! I do tip when playing table games when in Vegas, but that's a horse of a different color entirely

I did once, when I first moved to Southwest Florida almost 9 years ago.

I was playing all the area codes in the immediate area. When the lady at Publix food store saw my numbers, she noticed that they were most of the area codes. She said that 992 is also one of the area codes. I told her that she was right, and that how could I have missed that. So I played it, and sure enough 992 came out that night.

I buy my lottery tickets at several places where I also buy other things. I don't tip the clerks when I'm not buying lottery tickets so I don't when I do.

For example I buy tickets when I buy gas and a tank of gas can easily amount to $65 and I might buy $15 worth of lottery tickets too' and I can't see me tipping the clerk in that situation. I figure the cost of service is included in the price.

There should be nothing embarrassing at all about it. We're all just posting our personal opinions. Also, many times people vote and don't post comments and vice versa.

If I frequented a store and knew the names of the clerks, I might also tip. It's usually very busy wherever I go and there's a wait at the counter. I am a regular at the store where I buy my numbers. When I win big, I tip my clerk. She gives me tips on what hot numbers are being played. If it's almost draw-break she wave for me to bring my numbers up to the front so she can run them and I get back in line and wait my turn to pay. When she is busy in the back and see me she will open up a register and take my tickets. Sometimes I will buy a number for her if I think it is coming. I have been going to same store for years. They let me drop off my slips - pick them up later on way home. On a substantial win - I always tip. I see other regular customers do the same.

My feeling is if God blessed me - I'll pass it on.

I have a regular lottery clerk. I told her once that if I won a multi-million dollar prize, I would give her $10,000. That sounds fair considering how little she makes and what a big jerk the owner of the Amarillo, Texas Toot n Totum company has proven himself to be. He was once quoted as saying that if you can't afford my gas, you are obviously not working hard enough. We have the highest gasoline prices in Texas most of the time. Do you feel it necessary, since it is part of their job.

I'm a pretty good tipper most of the time. I rarely leave less than 20% at a restaurant or for a service like a hair stylist. When I used to go to casinos, I'd tip the dealer if I was on a winning streak. However, I can't imagine tipping a clerk at a store. Guru101..nothing is wrong with giving a small tip ...ESPECIALLY if it is at a store that you buy tickets at on a regular basis..next time the store is crowded or something the cashier may let you butt in line or something..or do a little something extra for you...you know..kinda like you scratch my back I will scratch yours..lol

I was in the gas station where I buy my lottery tickets and I was behind a guy who won a straight on pick 3. He then handed the clerk $20 as a tip because she had punched in his numbers. I wanted to find out how many people do this when they get a significant win (not just a box). Do you feel it necessary, since it is part of their job.
