Back to the precise beginning topic of this thread, why the Hoosier Lotto jackpot has gotten so high.

According to my calculations, according to recent sales, on a given draw there is about a 1 in 10 chance of a jackpot winner. And it has rolled quite a bit of times, a lot more than 10. But hey, can't a game go on a long roll once in a while? Well, problem here is, it's not the first long string of rollovers for this game. Not too long ago it rolled all the way up to $28 or so million.

If the current cash value is 60%, then I think it's a result of higher than normal ticket sales.

The actual cash value is always directly related to ticket sales, because a percentage of sales goes to each prize level. The relative values of the cash in the prize pool and the annuity value is determined by the interest that is expected to be earned with the cash. Varying tickets sales has nothing to do with it.

Ohio use to have a similar conversion rate like Indiana that varied between 40%-60% of the annuity amount. It varied because the interest of the annuity investment varied much like banks CD interest rates, so they finally said its cash value was 50% of the stated jackpot value.

I've heard that its actually value is still based on the interest paid by the annuity investment but they say 50% because it's easier and only the jackpot winners really need to know for sure..

Jim and Jeff, I haven't got a reply to my email yet, but I'm tired of waiting on it. I'm going to believe that the cash value is approximately 40-50% of the lump sum as stated on the FAQ page. Well Jim, actually the record hasn't been broken, it's been tied. The previous record was at $42 million. One more roll will make a new record. Even with a new record, I don't expect any type of press release or commercial. I hardly ever see a Hoosier Lottery commercial. The Hoosier Lottery just doesn't advertise their lottery as much as others like the Kentucky Lottery. Haven't got a response from my email yet.

I'm very surprised that the Hoosier Lottery hasn't made a press announcement about their new record breaking jackpot. Does that strike anyone else as odd?

In addition I was able to confirm that they do not post the Cash Value of the jackpot anywhere. Not on their site...not at the retailers...a customer or retailer can't even get that information from a lottery terminal print out. I emailed the lottery about the raffle and they said all winning numbers will be drawn. Someone else should verify that they will in fact pick all 777 winners out of the total tickets sold not the total tickets available.

I don't play the game because I live in Ohio, however if PowerBall's jackpot rolls to over $200M in a week or so I plan to drive to Indiana to buy some PB tickets and I may buy some Lotto tickets too.

Both games advertise an annuity amount and what their cash values are. If I win either or both I will probably take the cash option.

I do stand corrected. The Hoosier Lottery raffle at this rate might ACTUALLY be the best chance to win a million as long as they dont pull any funny business and pick all the numbers they said they would. At this rate I cant see them selling any more than 100k total of these tickets out of the 325k. Which means you have a 50k to one shot at hitting the million and a true one million to one shot per dollar. But would you be shocked if the lottery itself wound up buying all the remaining ticke... If you take the lump sum, you can't complain about being $30 million short of the annuity prize. It's annuity, of course it's going to be a lot higher than the lump sum. It goes the same with PowerBall and Mega Millions. Also, I would like to see official documentation that the lump sum is exactly 40%.

So why dont states just advertise $18 million lump sum oppposed to $42 million annuitized? Why bother? Cause they KNOW that most of the public is uneducated and they are looking to create false hype or interest by inflating the numbers. State run lotteries are no better than enron or arthur andersen. Former Executive Director Esther Q. Uh 40-50% is one hell of a range, I dont care if you are talking one dollar or 40 million dollars. The Hoosier Lottery along with all lotteries are major rip offs. Taxation on taxation. The point of the lawsuit is that the Hoosier Lottery did exactly that. They published false and misleading information in order to entice people to buy tickets for a game where the prizes didn't exist.

According to the article in the Fort Wayne Observer...the Hoosier Lottery advertised over $8 million in prizes available for the Cash Blast game. They sold 5 million tickets at $10 each for a total $50 million in ticket sales. In total they paid out less than $1 million in prizes on t... [ More ]

I remember reading about those guys, one was even a professional investor as I recalled. He should have known better than to believe the lottery would publish anything that would give a player with extra money an advantage over the average lottery player. Publishing such information could discourage the average players from buying tickets and bring down the whole system.

with their scratch offs a while back when someone had the resources to purchase numerous

amounts of tickets based on the remaining prizes only to find that the remaining prizes were

I estimate sales from the prize with the lowest odds because that's most likely to fit the statistical model. There's a fair chance that there will be more or less winners than expected as the odds go up. The fortune cookie PB is an extreme example. Either way, I'm sure we're both close enough for playing armchair quarterback.

I's also like to see prizes that are directly related to actual sales, and therefore actual cash collected, but if the average sales are in the neighborhood of $630,00... [ More ]

By the way...I neglected to mention one other thing Esther did...

According to published reports Esther implemented a new bonus program for herself and the top officials of the Hoosier Lottery. Based on the profitability of the Hoosier Lottery...Esther and the top lottery staff got a new bonus program that was approximately equal to 1/3 of her (and presumably their) annual salary.

In light of this the motive for the aforemntioned changes SHOULD BE OBIVOUS.

I disagree. So what if it adds up to more than the sum total of all the other prizes. There's nothing wrong with that because 2/6 is VERY, VERY EASY to get. Lets look at odds for 2/6 and 3/6:

Match 3 OF 6 $3 1:53.45

Match 2 OF 6 Free Quick Pick 1:7.31

So, mathematically, 2/6 is 7.311 times easier to win. Now lets look at the payouts for the last draw for 2/6 and 3/6:

And trust me I am very familar with the odds posted by the Hoosier Lottery on their Lotto game. The point I'm trying to make is the number of free tickets won exceeds the sum total of all cash prizes paid out at all levels.

What that means in real life is...the actual CASH payouts are horrible.

Thanks, Jim. I'll admit to playing Devil's advocate a bit on this one. I'm not sure where you're getting the info on the free tickets, but it sounds like you're adding them to the number of tickets sold , which I'm not doing. I'm estimating ticket sales with the odds and the number of winners at the lowest level, which accounts for the number of free tickets. Hey Floyd,

First let me say that as a rule I admire your posts. They are generally well thought out...well reasoned and well written. However, when it comes to the doings of the Hoosier Lottery reason (IMHO) does not apply.

Your point is well taken. I have been estimating the Hoosier Lottery's sales per draw as well and my figures are very close to yours. During this run I estimate that they are selling approximately 950,000 tickets per mid week drawing and about 1,200,000 for a weeken... [ More ]

What's the surprise? If they gave out 160,000 prizes with odds of 11 in 7.31 it's safe bet that they only sold about 1,170,000 tickets. Even if none of the combinations were repeated there would be better than a 90% chance that nobody would win. A rollover is what should be expected.

Hey Jeff,

The Hoosier Lottery did indeed roll over for the 84th consecutive time! Since the next draw will be in August we we are now in the 10th consecutive month without a jackpot winner.

As for the number of free tickets given out...this is about right for the current run. I have followed this statistic for a couple if years now and traditionaly they give out more free tickets on Saturday than they do on Wednesday. Presumably this is because they sell more tickets for a Saturday draw... [ More ]

Well, Looks like noboby won the Hoosier Lottery again! It just keeps growing. I think they had alot of players cause there were 160,000 people who won free tickets. I believe there were 0 straight winners on pick 3 midday and 3 straight winners on pic 3 eve. No straight winners on pic 4 midday and evening. Wonder how much higher it will go
