I don't know why, but I'm getting a gut feeling that no one will win on Friday and Tuesday's jackpot will be at least $450M. $480M is definitely possible. Who knows, come drawing time, the jackpot could even make it to $500M. The reason I say this is because a jackpot that is advertised as $450M will cause a frenzy so big that sales will be good enough to add an extra $50M.

Hey, PowerBall is known to get a several $100M+ jackpots in a roll every now and then. For all we know, this could be another run to $300M+. There is no doubt in my mind that had nobody won Saturday, Wednesday's jackpot would be at $390M. A $400M+ jackpot was a lot closer than what some people think. Either way, I look forward to another $300M+ jackpot within the next 3 months.

Those of us who understand how it works are looking at the cap on the increase. The most it can go up is $25 million above the previous record, so therefore 390 is the highest it can go on the first roll that is more than the current record of $365 million. I know it's a challenging concept, but if it rolls to 375 and then goes to 400, the 400 will be the 2nd jackpot that exceeds the current record. OMG, again with the cap talk. People, the PowerBall isn't capped at $390M. If it rolls to $375M, there will be a cap of $400M. You people need to look at the INCREASE cap. Also, I think some of you are becoming obsessed with the cash value argument. It's already been discussed that PowerBall and Mega Millions each have their advantages. I already accounted for the difference. Assuming that sales for this run match sales for the run that created the 365 million jackpot there would be almost $50 million cash for the jackpot prize pool. Increasing the annuity value by $90 million would require about $42 million. That would leave close to $8 million for the bonus pool (about $15 million if it were annuity, which is where the 105 in my last post came from). Actually, the bonus pool will have only $2.3 million to $4.7 million, because it is all cash and not annuitized like the advertised jackpot is.

I'd have to agree with that. Another roll will hit the cap and have about 5 million in the bonus pool. Not much. But since Mega is also high there will be less cross traffic from other states. Hard to say since both have never been this high together.

Next stop for Mega would be 245 with a cash pot of 142 million. I'm sure one of them wil get hit on the Friday/Saturday drawings. Odds of both rolling would be unprecedented. Powerball would hit the cap while Mega would be at near record levels... [ More ]

If it rolls one more time you probably will get to find out. If it was just a coincidence that the last big run went from 300 to exactly 365 then another roll would be unlikely to push it past 370 to 375. Since that's not what happened, similar sales would add enough cash to bump the annuity jackpot by about $105 million, and it would roll to 405 if it weren't for the cap. If it does roll one more time I expect it to reach 390, with 5 to 10 million for the bonus pool.

The cap started after the 315 prize so the 315 prize was set by sales only using the old Powerball game (better odds, more cash). Powerball made some changes including the new cap, longer odds and very little cash. After the prize reached 340 it was capped and any additional sales was added to the 5 + 0 pool. This is quoted from the PowerBall website:

Whenever the Powerball jackpot reaches a record level, the amount of the jackpot prize is limited to increases for each draw of no more than $25 million.

The difference that 340-315=25 and 365-340=25 is just a coincidence and has nothing to do with the increase cap. If you don't get it now, then there's no hope for you to get it at all.

Well of course they're from two different runs. If they were from the same run nobody would have won the 340 and it wouldn't have been a record. I'll try this one more time, but I'm really not optimistic at this point.

No, you have it wrong. The 2 records, the $340M record and $365M record were won from 2 different runs.

I'm certain that some people don't get it. Why did the record increase exactly $25 million from 340 to 365, without offering a $340 million jackpot again?

In February 2006 the record was 340 million, and it rolled from 250 to 300. I'm pretty sure that 300 is less than 340, so at that time the jackpot hadn't exceeded the record. What are you talking about? The previous record was $340M. $300M is not more than $340M. I don't think you get it. The jackpot has to FIRST meet or exceed the current record(which now is $365M) before ANY cap is applied. For example, if PB rolled to $290M and then rolled to $350M, the cap will not be applied because $350M is not greater than or equal to the current record of $365M. You're confused about how the cap works. As you correctly note, the cap applies when the jackpot meets or exceeds the previous record of 365. If a couple of rolls pushes the advertised jackpot to anything over 300 or so the next jackpot will exceed 365. That means the cap will apply. That means the next jackpot can't be more than 390, though it could be less depending on the previous jackpot and sales.

Well the recent jumps were:

141-161 = +$20M

161-181 = +$20M

181-210 = +$29M

210-245 = +$35M

So I'm guessing it would roll to $290M. I think $400M+ is definitely possible. Looking at the next possible rolls:

290-345

345-400

That's about a $185M cash value. Not too shabby if you ask me. I think I would take the annuity though.

Looks like both games survived. Powerball only needs to roll twice to reach it's cap or close to it. Megamillions needs to roll three times to get close to it's record.

I still think Powerball will get hit on the 22nd and Mega won't last long either.

The annuity value is nonsense and so, in some sense, is the cash value.

What matters is the expectation value, which is the ratio of possible return to the odds of winning.

Odds of either game making it near $300 million are low due to the actual odds of them getting there. Powerball has also never rolled once it hits the cap. It doesn't mean it's not possible just very improbable. The cap of $390 is part of the rules of Powerball. I would doubt given the big rise in sales that it would hit a jackpot between $366-389. But you never know.

Looks like PB grows this round but I really doubt PB can get near it's current cap of $390 million or that MM will even reach $275 million.

That is the same as telling everybody that play these games when the jackpots are low that you hope they lose. And I'll bet the people that waited until last night to play MM because the jackpot was over $100 million don't like to read negative comments like that either. There are some posters here that can tell us the probability of a jackpot rolling but it's just the statistics that are negative not the poster saying you'll probably lose.

Actually if both games didn't have jackpots with cash values of $5M-$20M of each other they would be growing faster. I usually drive to Indiana for PB tickets when its jackpot is $180M+ but since MM jackpot cash value is only $5M-$20M less, the money spent on gas and PB tickets would be better spent on MM tickets in my opinion so I won't be making the trip unless MM is hit first. I imagine both games will less than normal out of state players as long as both jackpots continue to roll.... [ More ]
