Being in Mobile, I know that you don't have to go far to play. You got Florida only a short drive away along with Casinos in Biloxi (and a new one being built in Gautier). And a casino only 45 minutes away in Atmore. As well as the dog track off I10. Also, living close to Alabama my entire life I know Alabama pretty much does what Tennessee does only a few years later. So a lottery is possible. Just have to wait on the next demo governor. As for Mississippi... Forget it. I think the casin... [ More ]

Alabamians have approved of dog racing in Mobile, horse racing in Eutaw, AL, I think, plus they have gambling on a couple of the Indian Reservations, right. Now Mississippi might, soon, because they have casinos in the water on the Gulf Coast, and inland on the Mississippi River (Vicksburg and Natchez) in addition to the casinos on the Indian Reservation in Philadelphia. MS. So, I think these two states are ripe. Mississippi knows that a lot of their dollars go to Florida and Louisiana for lo... [ More ]

Well, since I am originally from Alabama, I will enter my comment from what I know from relatives and friends that are there. Since Alabama is considered to be in the mainstream bible belt, a vast majority of the residents see lotteries as a tool of the Devil (there idea not mine). So the change of Alabama entering the lottery any time soon would be as good as me teeing off in Florida and having the ball land on the green in Arizona, not likely to happen.

Utah - No, Mormons

Alabama - Very doubtful

Alaska and Wyoming - Population not enough to generate any mentionable jackpots?

Hawaii- No- Yakuza, they ruin all the illegal games already and don't want any competiton

Nevada - No, the casinos see a lottery as a threat.

Mississippi - For right now, no.

None are on the brink right now. Arkansas' Lieutenant Governor was making a push for a lottery there, but he recently stopped, most likely due to threats from the 'God Patrol'.

Wyoming was also thinking of starting up a lottery, apparently for the sole purpose of selling Powerball, but it was shot down, mostly from fears that it would hurt state OTB sales.

This comes up here from time to time. Any word on what will be the next state to get a lottery? Are there any that are on the brink?

Last I checked we still are waiting for Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.
