I give them all the time .. I love surprising dad with a handful. He loves checking those numbers on Thurs/Sun Mornings.

I have given them to the principal of the school, the teachers, friends, and my children. If one of them wins, I expect nothing. It would make me feel good knowing I made their lives a little sweeter.

Years ago, I gave an acquaintance 3 or 4 scratch-offs in a birthday card. The next time I saw her, she said thanks for the card and lottery tickets. Then she got all shifty-eyed and said I didn't win anything. I guess she thought I'd expect a cut of her winnings. I just said Ah, sorry. Better luck next time.

That's when I figured out that money, especially free money, could easily cause huge problems between friends. Before that, I would buy a lottery ticket when with friends and... [ More ]

I've given and received scratch-off tickets as gifts and never thought of it as a partnership but none of the tickets have produced a large winner. The tickets are usually a variety ten or twenty $1 or $2 tickets and the top prizes are around $5000 so it's not the same as the potential to win millions.

When I stop and think about it: The gift giver got to play the Lottery and give a gift (not) all for the same $20. LOL!

I never thought about it like that but you're right. LOL... [ More ]

I did: I was given a couple of $10 rub-offs: I was going to rub them off later, but the gift giver insisted I rub them off now. (they were both losers) I'm sure if one of them was a Winner the Gift giver would have expected half the prize money. When I stop and think about it: The gift giver got to play the Lottery and give a gift (not) all for the same $20. LOL

I voted give them 50%. I'd make them co-claim if that's possible in the state the ticket was bought in. If not, I'd take half of what's left after taxes for me, pay the 25% gift tax on the other half, and give them what's left. Whaddya wanna bet that would cause big problems with many friendships, with the friend thinking they should get to take home the same amount as me.
