I voted for the last payment would probably be chump change. Who knows what that many years of inflation would do.

One thing I'd like to know about the annuity. At the end of the 26-29 year spell do they get to keep the original cash amount (ie. you only got the interest payments off of it, none of the principal) or do they gradually pay it so you get 100% of the original principal and all of the interest, minus any applicable taxes of course.

True, but with the annuity you have to think about the your age. If you are in your 50s or so, would you live the 30 years to receive all of the annuities? If you died prior to all the annuities could your surviving family members pay the lump sum taxes on what remains in the annuities. While the annuities are nice, I would rather take the lump sum and have total control over how and where my money is being used. Call me selfish, but having the lump sum gives me a little more leverage to negotia... [ More ]

With 230 mill you wouldnt need cash option, if you choose annuity you will receive 6+ million per year, and it increases EVERY year

I thought they dropped the annuity option because too many Martians were complaining about having to wait almost 2 Earth years for each payment (one Martian year = 687 days according to Wikipedia).

I read where the Martian Lottery Commission discontinued the annuity option when they discovered NASA's Mars rovers.

It didn't say if they have live or computer drawings.

You never know what the tax system is going to do over the next 10 years, same with the value of the dollar. I'd put some of it in Euros and perhaps gold and silver coins in order to hedge inflation.

You can't roll around naked in a big pile of annuity.

BTW, the Mayan calendar doesn't stop at 12/21/12 any more than the Gregorian calendar stops at 21/31/12. OTOH, my 2007 calendar did stop on 1/31/08. Strangely, the world is still here, and appears to be relatively unchanged.

I still don't trust the concept of an annuity. We don't know what kind of thing the gov could pull 10 years down the road. I'd rather take 1/2 of a gaurantee than 100% of an unknown.

What's the best (fun) reason for cash instead of an annuity?

I mean, there is the Mayan prophecy about 2012 (The Mayan calendar just stops at 12-21-2012), the world is indeed a powderkeg, no one can really foresee the future, etc...
