I'd be more concerned that he understand how to solve problems of this kind.

Don't let the letters scare you. If x is what you're looking for (instead of y or z), it's all about isolating x on one side of the equals sign, using simple arithmetic.

In the example you gave: divide both sides by y, so you get x-1 = z/y. Then, just add 1 to both sides: x = z/y + 1. Easy peasy.

The concept is what's important here. Once you have that down, the rest is just 4th grade math.... [ More ]

Just solve for X, if Y and Z are not defined (set equal to something), then the answer will look something like these answers depending on the form presented as a multiple choice.

X = (Z / Y) + 1 or X = (Z + Y) / Y, both are valid answers.

math problems are like so....if Y (x-1) = Z then X = ? please help soon. thanks its for my godchild for his GED and will need further help. will possibly need to phone someone he is doing this online. its a online GED. thanks guys
