If it's just your parents and you want to give them half, they could be co-owners of the ticket and you would be responsible for paying the taxes on your half and they on theirs. It becomes more complicated when the winners want to keep half and decide to give the rest to many members of their family and/or friends.

It would be great if the lotteries would allow the winners to divide the winnings into shares to avoid paying the gift, but I doubt the IRS allows them.

For real. I used to think to myself, that if I ever win Powerball, I was going to give half to my parents. I knew the gift tax existed, but I had no idea how high it was. I decided to look on the IRS website and found out that it's 45%. That is insanely high. If I gave half to my parents, I would end up with close to 1/4 of what I actually won and I would end up having a lot less than them, which doesn't make sense to me. So his $42,529,765, turns out to be only $1.4 million, after he gives the bulk of it away to relatives. I don't think I will do that, if I ever win the big one.

Well, Monday has come and gone, and still no press conference or shout out to LP. In fact, neither the Pennsylvania Lottery nor Powerball have saud anything on this. I think I'd hold off on congradulating EZMoney just yet. Also, the PA Lottery has said that the ticket was purchased in Lancaster County, which is kinda near Philadelphia.

Well, I google earth'd the area. Looking at some of the historical sites, such as Amish town, Leahman's bridge, probably a bit N/E of where the ticket was purchased, and a few of the remaining original Willow trees on the main thoroughfare in Willow. yeah and philly is close to Pittsburg in a stately sort of way. Jeez, Grantville is NOT down the road from Willow Street (1 hour and ten minutes) and its alot of back roads.
