More than 20 years ago the NY lottery ran newspaper ads telling people to stop playing obvious patterns. At that time the most common pattern was the diagonal starting from the top left corner. IIRC, they said that more than 10,000 people played that in every drawing, with a similar number playing the diagonal starting at the top right. I'm sure the same trend is true today, but with millions of tickets in play for each PB or MM drawing I wouldn't be surprised if some combinations are played 50... [ More ]

or for that mater many people play numbers on the tickets 4 corners and one in the middle they play numbers in a straight line. and x pattern every conceivable shape of letters in the alphabet. They may try and make them in a sequence of the shape or skip every other number. You'd be amazed if you were a retailer and saw the many configurations of the way people enter there selections on play slips.

When was the last time you looked at a QP and it was 7, 16, 22, 31, 43 and 28? Even if you've bought 176,000 QP's the most you've seen is 1 of every 1000 possible combinations.

It isn't just morons who would play 1 2 3 4 5 6, but if it were, there are more than enough of them to play it 100's of times each drawing. A long time ago I knew somebody who played it regularly, precisely because he figured nobody else would be stupid enough to play it.
