I agree with Coin-Toss and probably most other lottery players would too.

Now that you know that, if you are giving numbers to other players you should tell them up front that if they win any money you are expecting a share of it. You should also have them sign a contract just in case you have to go to court to get their money and their defense is they've never has heard of anything so outrageous.

Once I got a PM from a LP member in California. Ohio Rolling Cash5 had a jackpot exceeding $500K at the time and he said he usually sent numbers to his sister in Ohio to play when the jackpot was that large but she had moved to another state and he thought maybe I would be interested in playing them instead. Back in the day when the pick-3 was the only lottery game, it was common to ask or be asked which number are you playing and if that number was drawn, the next day we asked how much did you win. If they bet $10 straight on the number and I only bet a 50 cent box, I can't think of a reason why I should expect compensation from them just because they had more confidence in my pick than I did. And their bet had no affect on my winnings.

People here are plenty nice, but you just can't go giving money out to everyone or you would have none left!

It does depend on amount though. If someone from a non-PB state were to give me numbers for the PB here that they felt really good about, and then I played and the numbers won, the jackpot would be plenty big to throw some their way. I would consider a 'consulting bonus' in that situation.

I wouldn't expect anything back if I gave someone numbers for any lottery and they hit. If I felt that good about the numbers, I would play them myself as well. If someone gives you numbers and they are just too lazy to get down to the store to play the numbers themselves, I would not think they are owed anything at all.

Buying tickets for them when you travel out of state to buy PowerBall or MegaMillions tickets for yourself?

Advancing them a few dollars to play when they are a little short?

Picking up their tickets when there are too busy or unable to do it themselves?

Any of the above I would say Yes , compensate them for their time and effort.

Unless they're giving lots of number combinations to lots of people and ready to stand there with their hand out should one of them hit (common, such people are known as touts).

Since games are entirely luck-based, I don't see how anyone could really help someone win a lottery.

If you mean someone helped you pick the numbers played, then it would be between you and them. Personally, I'd want to avoid that scenario like the plague. Friendships can be strained by any kind of money pressure. And divvying up a jackpot might create that pressure.
