Lotteries define a pick-3 straight bet as putting all three digits in exact order and define a boxed bet as the same three digits being in any order. When we box three digits for a $1, we are actually making 6 straight bets at a reduced cost; $1 divided by 6 equals $.167 and the payoff is $83. Some states round off the $.167 to $.16 and the payoff is $80.

Ok, let me try to explain this to you, Wheeling a number is to play it all 6 ways such as (123,) for .50 cents it will cost you 3.00 and for 1.00 it will cost you 6.00 to hopefully catch that special number you are waiting for straight..... doubles are half of the cost of a single number to try and catch it straight.... because it only has to fall 3 ways to catch it straight.... hope this helps to explain it a little for you.
