Did you ever do your taxes and have to find a chart for your age to find out how much you owed? Tax brackets are the same regardless of age. OTOH, if somebody has a good job they may well be in a higher bracket than someone who's retired. If you won a few grand the taxes might be lower if you let somebody else claim it for you. If you win a jackpot and let somebody else claim it the best you can hope for is to save a piddling amount by having an extra few bucks taxed at a lower rate.

I'm not so sure the tax tables are the same for someone over 65 (and retired) as they are for someone under 65 (and not retired), I don't remember the details of the conversations, but years' ago folks said 'if I win the lottery I will have my (retired) mom collect the winnings because her taxes would be 1/4th of what mine would be', etc.

When I'd be selling a mattress mention the 25 year warranty to an older couple, sometimes they'd laugh. I heard that expression a few times. I won't even buy green bananas.

81 year old winner I'll take the 30 year annuity.

Unless she already has a very large estate, she can leave everything to her family without any concern about estate tax, that is, unless the laws change. She can also give away up to a million in her lifetime with paying gift tax. Still, I was surprised to see an 81 year old claiming a lottery prize. Read this press release today and immediately thought of Lottery Post!

The Florida Lottery announced today that Margaret Weiss, 81 of Hallandale, came forward to claim her $1 million Holiday MILLIONAIRE RAFFLE prize. In addition to the nine $1 million top prizes, the Lottery also awarded 10 prizes of $50,000, 12 prizes of $5,000 and 1,000 prizes of $500. Weiss is the seventh of nine raffle winners to claim the $1 million top prize.
