I finally spoke to the attorney with the Florida Lottery and she indicated federal laws would be the issue here. She said the FBI shut down several clubs over the years because they were fraudulent - of course, that is one of my hurdles for starting a club - building trust.

The attorney did not speculate on the tax issue and referred me to a tax attorney. My guess at this point is taxes would be an issue for large jackpots. Florida Lottery keeps 25% of the winnings over $5,000 and I would hav... [ More ]

I spoke to the local lottery office last week concerning a lottery pool and was informed it was illegal due to USPS laws about gambling across state line - but the main issue is verification of age of the players. I was then referred to the Hotline for more information.

It took me a few days to get through for more information. I managed to get them on the phone today and was transferred to the Office of Legal. Their main attorney is going to call me back later today.

I recall a post on here about one of the big games over there in usa, where the lotto wanted to canvas the idea of buying shares in tickets.

instead of paying $1 for 1 line you paid $1 for 10 shares in 10 lines, ie 10c into a pool for that 1 line.

I liked that idea , i liked it a lot. of course the whole scheme is ran by the state lotto, so not a pool or club in the traditional sense but still a cheap fee for a share in a possible big jackpot. you get 10x more chance of winning for 1

Hi all!

Like many issues in life, there are several opinions. I did not intend for this discussion to become heated and hope everyone respects all opinions here.

This is a great website and I have enjoyed it for years.

My purpose for posting this thread was to gain from other's experience. I would not do anything illegal and will research a pool before forming one. I am meeting with the Florida Lottery Tuesday.

I am also not recruiting here. Just learning.

Of course! These forums are here so that people can discuss different sides of issues that what forums are for on any web site.

I do not expect that you're going to read my post and say, Oh yeah, you're right, I'm not playing in pools anymore! But I do expect that people who have not decided either way, or who are open for change, and who happen to come across this thread, might read something here that helps them decide one way or the other.

Like time*treat said its best to play by yourself, but if you feel you want to play with others then I would suggest picking a family member you trust with all your heart and play with that person.

$10 invested to win $105,000 is not good in lottery terms!

If you invest (hate using that word when talking about the lottery) $10 in Cash 5 in Texas, you'll have a better shot at winning, and even if the Cash 5 top prize is $50,000, you'll win $500,000 ($350,000 with taxes coming out), as opposed to winning $105,000 in that pool.

Yes maybe for ppl wanting the big dream of 15 million themselves, but i am more then happy with $105,000....They all only pitched in $10, not a bad investment to win $105,000.....You wouldn't hear me complaining...And the cash 5 here in texas never gets that high, your lucky if it hits $75,000 and thats if no one else hits too at the same time...and how many tickets would you be able to risk losing $500 to purchase that many tickets yourself? See, your story actually helps point out why many people are opposed to playing in pools. With 50 people in a pool, that $15 million jackpot, which is actually about $7.5 million in cash but really about $5.25 million after taxes are withheld amounts to $105,000 per person.

The reason people play the big lotto games is to win an amount so big that they will never have to worry about money again.

Oh no problem....I actually do research pretty good on sites before i participate in them...Yes i guess to win on your own is always great, but your odds are also not as good...I missed a chance of a lifetime years ago when a group of medical ppl i worked with did a group lotto, it was 50 ppl in it... I was on vacation and didn't participate in it, they hit the 649 jackpot, It was something like 15 million, then the next nite they actually got all 5 numbers on the cash 5....Now what are the odds... No, the law is not just about actual lottery tickets. It forbids any type of printed materials promoting, arranging, or engaged in commerce of gambling. Also, if the materials are being mailed across state lines, that's worse because it involves inter-state commerce.

Also, what you call donations are not seen in the eyes of the law in that manner, because they are directly related to the operation of your club. They are paying for its operation.

I believe this law is intended to stop people from selling lootery tickets by mail for a profit. No actual tickets will be mailed - only scans.

A lotto club would be handled by a few people locally and only money is transferred.

I will be talking to the Florida Lottery people next week to find out the dos and don'ts. I can't believe a lottery club would violate gambling laws since the games are legal in the states where the tickets are bought - and no one is making money off the club by ch... [ More ]

I agree, and a federal law adds to that, by not allowing the sending of gambling materials using a common carrier which means FedEx, UPS, etc.

From USPS Publication 300a, Page 9:

Except for state-owned and -operated lotteries, federal law prohibits sending lottery material through the mail.

When you read the federal law, you will find that that includes tickets, money, or offers to sell lottery tickets. Technically, if your brother that lives across town from you sends you a dollar to buy a ticket for him, he just broke a federal law.

Many people who post similar questions to yours have no clue about the dangers that await them if they join a web site claiming to buy lottery tickets. They will spend $1,000 or more on lottery tickets and have no idea that they are not actually playing the lottery.... [ More ]

I not aware of any clubs, however I have a website where I go to and the information as well as the methods are free. No cost and picks are free as well. PM me for the website name. Also, the person that runs the site writes a column for Lottery news magazine.

I could not agree more with this post. There will always be that one person who hangs around, contributes nothing ( no ideas, no money, no time, no effort ) but when another member wins the jackpot, will want his fair share . You can try to protect yourself as much as you want but you will never protect yourself enough. Therefore, play on your own; win on your own.

I have heard of people on here that does it and they make good money sharing informaiton with one another. I was interested in getting a club together myself. I will PM you this could be a good start. Money does not have to be exchanged to be in a club. We will be putting our heads together for the states we live in.

Your question is actually a little dangerous, from a risk perspective, which is why RJOh recommended forming a club with friends. (A good suggestion.)

Around here on the Internet has no meaning, because the Internet is everywhere. Do you really want advice on joining some lottery club with people, all of whom you have never met?

The majority of lottery clubs on the Internet would risk your money. Many would be outright theft. Others are pyramid schemes.
