Well that's one reason some people take the money over 20 years. Once relatives know you don't have all that money at once they should come to their senses and realize things haven't changed all that much.

I don't think really poor people have the wherewithal to look up lottery winners to ask for money, but scammers likely make it their business to get that info weekly and mail out their letters like contest entries in the hope of connecting with a sucker. At least one book about winning the lottery suggests Kidnap Ransom insurance.

With all the news about the Mexican drug cartels I was thinking hitting a jackpot and remaining anonymous should be the standard.

There are many more good people than bad people out there. One gets the impression that our country is full of criminals because that's all we hear about in the media. Still, one bad person willing to do whatever necessary (including torture, murder, kidnapping, ect.) makes winning a large amount of money scary. They know you have money in the bank; that your fortune is not tied up in stocks, bonds, land, and so on. So they become more aggressive.

In California, kidnapping for ransom gets life in prison with no parole. Actually, I really haven't read about kidnapping for ransom in newspaper.

Still, there are people out there who will try their best to extort rich people. I bet lottery winners are the first ones they chase.

It would be really, really frustrating to get thousands of letters saying they need help. It's really scary.
