Or the one you snubbed in high school tries to convince you to give them a second chance.

I was shunned and tormented by a lot of people in school and if I did win and they came looking for me, I would just ignore them, because all it would be is proof that what I thought of them back then was absolutely correct, I wouldn't go looking for them.

I remember him being a millionaire before the lottery, but he wasn't worth the $300 million he won. I think what happens to some people is that having so much money goes to their heads. They think with all that money, they can do anything they want and that rules, laws, etc. don't apply to them. This is a quote by Whittaker from his Wikipedia entry:

People want to have power. Maybe they are hoping that the girl that snubbed them in High School will see that they won and find them and then they can say where were you when I was poor? If you are not blessed with a nice bod then the only other thing is nice $$$, which any geek with a program and a handful of betslips has a chance at.

The other big mistake is someone wins and says they're going to help people.

I could not believe a millionaire would not pay his Homeowners fee and lost his house...That was really dumb!! Dave Edwards showed his true self with all that bragging on TLC. I liked the old Man in Kentucky that bought a home and shared it with is Daugter much better and bless his heart he died shortly after winning the big game!!

I like to watch the shows that tell people how much the spent to play the Lottery and how long it took to win it.

To be fair, Jack was already a millionaire before he won, but the winning made him apparently turn off his brain to all logic and sense. I don't think it has to do anything with intelligence and all to do with lacking any sense or letting the money cloud your judgment and yeah ignorance and stupidity do go into it at as well I guess..

BTW, I think we'll have another name to add to the lottery loser list in a couple years from someone who won a year ago.

I agree with rundown99's comments in the OP of this thread, mostly, but I don't think you can pin things down to any one reason.

In many cases people just don't consider the possible future consequences of their actions and decisions- couple that with winning a lottery jackpot and they night be shaking hands with old Duzzin Bodewell!

As far as people seeking their 15 minutes of fame, just consider some of the polls discussions here on LP about remaining anonymous or not.

People who come into wealth suddenly by Winning the lottery, if they have not acquired good money skills prior to this windfall, often struggle and make poor choices. Financial windfall coupled with reckless buying (belief that the money will never run out) and no concept of money almost always leads to trouble.

The vast majority of Lottery jackpot winners are smarter than Whitaker and Edwards.The have their 15 minutes of fame and go about their life.Whitaker Edwards wanted more than their 15 minutes of fame and you know the rest of the story.Give an idiot a fortune and all you have is an idiot with a fortune....the money didn't make them anything but rich idiots

To tell you the truth, I haven't really heard much about any jackpot winners in quiet awhile. It seems to me that we keep bringing up Whittaker and Edwards and a few others as the sample set of what lottery winners become....nothing really new......

Despite the fact that we are in a recession, lottery winners are showing up in front of the cameras trying to get their 15 minutes.
