Up to 600 dollars worth, like it says on the Michigan lottery webpage. As I said, there are offices specifically designed for bigger prizes, but if the lottery retailers can't redeem the 600 minimum, then there is a problem.

Yes,I believe that a lottery retailer should keep enough money on hand to pay any all winners that purchased a winning ticket at his store. He should have a safe to keep the money secure. He should also have insurance in case the money is stolen. If he doesn't have both a safe AND insurace,he's an idiot and should NOT be in business

If you sell lottery tickets you should be required to carry enough cash to pay the winners with.

Exactly how much cash is that? The news forum recently had a report about a guy who won 90k playing pick 4 on 20 tickets. A similar win in pick 3 would have been worth $9,000. Suppose a few other players had also won prizes from $100 to $500? Are you actually suggesting that the store all stores should keep $10,000 cash on hand just in case?

I agree that the retailers should make a reasonable

I think it was your post maddmike that brought this up. I haven't won anything big enough to empty their cash register, but reading your situation makes me very mad indeed! There's no need for a limit on how much stores can pay if they don't have any obligation to pay. It would be like a casino that would make you go halfway across the state just to pick up a few hundred dollars. States need to fix this. Either lower the amount stores will pay or give them the money on hand they need, but don't... [ More ]

I feel your anger.A few weeks ago I posted about the same issue. My wife won $500 on an Illinois scratch off ticket. The store owner refused to pay her at the time of her win because he already made his drop but said he would be happy to pay her if she came back at a specified time. When we came back at the specified time he started making excuses about why he couldn't pay.We ended up driving all over the county looking for a lottery retailer who would/could cash the ticket. We finally found a groce... [ More ]

I don't even know why I am replying to your rant...I have bought lottery tickets in Michigan, but I haven't even won so much as $1. All of my winnings have been in California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, and Indiana.

This is a rant. I don't know if this is for every state, but in Michigan, we have special offices for prizes of 600 and over. Prizes of 50000 and over must be claimed at lotto HQ in Lansing. Prizes under 600 can be claimed at any Michigan lotto retailer. However, there's a catch, they are under NO LEGAL OBLIGATION TO REDEEM THEM!!! This is BULL!!! If they are lottery retailers selling tickets, they should have the cash on them to redeem my ticket. It's not like they should be expected to redeem... [ More ]
