Yes, I would. Only I would buy one ticket because that's all I'd need.

Think about it. The way this situation is illustrated is that I have 10 dollars, and ONLY 10 dollars. Whether I have outside support from family or what ever doesn't make much of a difference because in the end, all I have is 10 dollars that are my own. After the reading the story I predict that those two people will be in the paper again within about five-seven years and they will be poster children for blowing through their lottery winnings within a relatively short time. I think it is great that they want to feed children and try to make sure that no one in the community goes hungry.

They were approached about starting a hockey team, that is something that can bleed them dry within a relatively short time. It reminds me of an English man

Common sense tells me I shouldn't be buying lottery tickets when I am down to my last $10.... it would be utterly irresponsible.

But... I know myself- I'm going to buy one. I've been playing since 2006. Never missed a draw. I only play one set of number. I can never forgive myself if my number combination fell and I did not play.

Agree. Depends on the difference the money would make.

I would probably just play a buck or 2 on P3 for a better chance at some short term cash rather than try to hit a jackpot.

I agree with you Hermanus104. No way would i spend my last $10 on a game of chance. We all know that you have to be very lucky to hit that jackpot. I just couldnt see myself taking a risk like that. As for my spouse...i would hope he knew better and thought about taking care of home first.

Depends on what difference that $10 would make. If keeping it made the difference between making a mortgage payment or not or getting some medicine or not then spending it on a lottery would be foolish but if that $10 wasn't going to make a difference in your plight then it's the hail Mary desperation move that probably won't help but at least there's a chance.

I would call it dumb or lazy, just plain old HUMAN NATURE, to try anything to get ahead; some people spent their last $10.00 on drugs, booze, hookers and you're correct that playing the lottery is a luxury and I'm glad the you made the right decision 7 years ago.

About 7 years ago I was in a similar situation, and the last thing on my mind was to play the lottery. Instead, I used that money for gas for my car on my way down to a day labor company the next day at 5:AM busting my hump digging ditches to make 50 bucks cash at the end of the day. If I couldn't work physically, then I'd find another way, but not spend money on the lottery. That's just irresponsible and absurd.

I would not necessarily call these people STUPID, LUCKY yes, STUPID NO.. All it took was one winning ticket and we don't know for sure if they gambled their entire last $10.00. They were at the right place, at the right time--LUCK OF THE DRAW to win respectively. Not a stupid move on their part. No, I wouldn't gamble it away. I have a fixed budget for playing the lottery each month and I do not go over that amount. The lottery is not my income. Rather, it is a small way that I supplement my income each month. If I was down to my last $10, I'm thinking simple things like food, gas (to travel to another interview, etc), or utilities would be a little more important than wasting it on a very small chance that I might win something with it. What more did they have to lose?

It's certainly true that $1 or even $10 isn't going to make a meaningful difference, but it's hardly a realistic scenario, and it doesn't mean the decison wasn't stupid. When you can't pay your necessary bills, throwing your money away is stupid and buying a lottery ticket generally means you are throwing your money away.

Check out Kirby and Marie Fontaine (November, 2009) in Google search.

This couple won the $50 million jackpot Lotto Max prize, which is one of the biggest jackpots in Canadian lottery history.

He was down to his last $10.

He could not work for health reasons.

They both struggled with health and money issues.

They have children.

In my opinion, they did not act stupidly.

What more did they have to lose?
