The way I figure it, I tipped when I patronize the store. I've had clerks ask for some money cause they cashed the ticket. My response to them is, did you help me pick out the winning number???...They usually shut up after that.

People should tip if they receive privileges from the store or clerk but in a big win i.e. Jackpot the store will get a commission anyways whether the store will spread the wealth to its employees is another question (I wonder if there's a thread that addresses that...it would be interesting to read what happened behind that kind of scene). If I won a large amount I would tell the lottery corporation the name of the clerk, not just the store that I purchased the ticket from, and then maybe I would go to the store later to make sure that the clerk got their fee from the lottery corporation for selling me that ticket.. If the corporation gave it to the manager of the store instead; I would approach the manager and tell them I wanted the clerk to get their fee , because they sold me the ticket..

I am the same but also different. $290 or more, not that I will 'tip' but I will be able to buy a locally made item that was too expensive for my budget normally. Also buy from a small locally owned store vs 'The Walmart'

The store I play lottery is a little ma and pa shop that gives me certain privileges that the owns only extend to their most frequent customers. This include calling numbers into the store and paying when ever I can get there. Going to the head of the line to play Keno or racetrax. Getting a discount on actual purchases from the store.

Their regular customers usually tip when they have big wins.

Actually certain numbers comes out around the same time, consistently! You will see this from your states archives of numbers that have come out! Tiggs if 976 comes out, you look for all the numbers which have come out around that number from the first time it has come out; you know the same time... and you will begin to see a pattern developed, and almost always it will show a group of numbers that comes out in your Sate around that number!

I don't agree with tipping clerks that sell tickets- because if you win a large amount for example- the lottery corporation gives a certain percentage to the seller of the ticket anyway..

So you wouldn't need to give the clerk a tip- because the lottery corporation would give them a certain fee..

Yes I tip Vince Conti. I buy his Tip Sheets month to month and when I hit Straight I send him a money order TIP. He's the best and I simply show my gratitude. However, store clerks that sell me my tickets get free tickets in lieu of cash. I will buy 50/50 on a pick 3 for example. I buy ten of them and hand one to the clerk. If it comes out we both WIN

money follows money so when u give a something to the person who cashed the ticket, money normally comes back to you. I will give something back, even if it's only $20, but if I only hit for $40 or $15, all they get is a thank you and have a nice day.

I have never tipped before, but that is only because the highest amount I have won so far in 8 years is $7.00 and that was after spending $30 on tickets. I have to seriously think about it but right now I would only tip if I hit the JP and even then I am not sure.

There are people who play big stacks of numbers at the beer and beverage store in my neighborhood. They hold up the line for long periods of time. Sometimes I can't get my few numbers in, before the state cut off time. I have noticed that these people give certain clerks nice tips for punching in all of their numbers. It's true that the retailer gets a bonus for selling a big winner, but unless the retailer is really generous the clerks get dreck.

I've put a five into a Salvation Army tea kettle for luck before. The retailer gets a percentage from the lottery commission when you win big and the lotteries are about the most profitable product they sell so there's really no need to tip. They're already glad to be selling the tickets.

Only if a clerk advises me to buy a ticket and it happens to be pretty big will I tip. I've had clerks give me the wrong advice because they want to buy the ticket for themselves. A lot of clerks keep up with which stack is a winner and which is eating up the money (regarding scratch-offs).

Many of these people I see every day and although I don't get real chummy with them, we do know each other on a first name basis. Many of them I have known for over 10 years. Sometimes they get a bunch of crap from the public for little pay. Sometimes I tip them without a win.

I think that is a nice thing to do. I have never thought to give the clerk a tip from my winnings- cause I guess I look at it like there was no real service involved. Them just doing their jobs. It is my policy to give 1% on a significant win, although I often give more.

I gave $100 on a $10K win.

I gave $60 on a $1590 win.

Although I did give $50 on a $500 win and gave my wife half of the win. So it didn't leave me with much. I'm not playing for $500 anyway, I want millions. :-)

About 90% of my 10K win went into my wife's bank account. But it went mostly for household stuff, wasn't wasted. I have a great wife.

If you win big at the Lottery Station they are going to get pay too, the same as you. Whenever someone wins big they get a commission. If it is just someone that I play with everyday, I might give them a tip, I have several times. Only thing is I never won a lot of money. the most I won was $800.00 I am still waiting

last dec. i hit 861 str. and 2way ,$791 just before xmas. the clerk not only would'nt put is phone down , he didn't say a word just gave me my money. i still gave him $20 bucks...later i felt he didn't deserve it . never again . anyway ..i gave my mom $100 to go to the casino and she hit for 8k,she gave all 6 of us kids and all of our spouses $300 each. moms are great! if you spread the right stuff around it will come back. good luck to all

there would only be two reasons for me two do this.

#1 - i get a powerball quick pick with powerplay option and hit 4 + 1 or higher

#2 - the cashier gets me to buy a scratch off ticket and I win $500 +

on reason # 1 - I might go back in and tip the cashier $500 if I won $20,000 or more or powerball

on reason # 2 - no more than $25 if the ticket was under $1000... $5000 or more I might tip $100

I do business consistently with the small town folk, and I make every effort to treat them consistently well, at the very least with kindness and respect (unless given reason to do otherwise). To do so also stands to reason logically, I think, because chances are good I'll be going back there again.

There are those oh so rare occasions when you connect with a clerk on a personal level, and you're not just another transaction. If that clerk sold me a winner I'd go back and reward them. Otherwise no. And tipping just for cashing my winning ticket? No way.

When I lived in New Jersey, I used to play the trotters and pacers at the Meadowlands. I was part of a group of guys that got so called inside information via the backside. When the word went out that a particular horse was live the info came via 1 particular teller who took the bets. When the hot horse won (which was about 60% of the time) we all cashed with the same teller and left a $20 tip. This insured that we stayed in the loop and continued to get good info. Granted, store clerks aren't working for tips, casino dealers are, but still, having been in the business it's unvcomfortable being a stiff . also, just as an FYI, if dealers relied only on winners to tip they'd starve. Granted, lottery is a lot different.

I tip people who work for tips because they work for tips and I tip better for good service. I tip mechanics and more if they save me money on the repair.

That said, there are places where you deal with the same people every time and they help you out, tell you which scratchers are hot, get you a lottery coffee mug and hat from the sales rep, etc. Even so, tipping creates a feeling of entitlement that could be a problem down the ro... [ More ]

I agree with jesjam..I will tip only when I hit a big jackpot..When you play pick 3 pick 4 or sacratchoffs you are going to lose more then you win..The real winners are the ones who hit a big jackpot and then you can afford to tip..

Depends on the win relative to the buy in.

Usually, if I win $20 or more on a $1 ticket I'll give the clerk who sold it to me a dollar or two or a five. I've has clerks refuse it and say hey can't take it, yet other clerks in the same store did.

If I win $290 on a Pick 3 I give them a $20.

That's about as good as it has gotten so far, except for one night on Powerball- I played the same ticket I played again for the clerk. It hit 4 + 0 and paid $110.
