I think it depends on the recipient. If they're a player they will enjoy getting it.

If however they're not a player and the ticket is a loser, then they feel like you didn't give them anything at all and will henceforth consider you a big dummy and an ingrate.

Only give them to players.

Well, I with agree you, ThatScaryChick. When I say I give them as a gift, that's not the ONLY gift. lol It's just a little something extra, stuck in their Christmas cards, or a stocking stuffer kind of gift.

In the past, when my mother, me or sisters have given scratch off tickets to each other for Christmas, it was as stocking stuffers only. I would never give anyone tickets thinking it was an actual gift, but we sometimes add them as stocking stuffers, it's fun. My youngest sister got three of them this year in her stocking and didn't win anything. Last year, she got a couple of $1 tickets and won $20 bucks. I have given lottery tickets, both scratch and powerball to my parents in the past, as gifts. I know that they would share if it was a jackpot prize, so that's not a problem. They both like to gamble, and occasionally play the lottery, so they enjoyed them. Since this has now become my hobby of all hobbies , I can't bear to buy a lottery ticket and part with it. lol I just know I'm going to win, and then I will share with all of them when I do.

Well that was certainly the case here. I gave someone a $20 scratcher and they lost.

After the crying stopped I had to explain that they had learned a valuable lesson and that only losers buy scratch offs. I guess the lesson is the true gift.

I bought a Redskins Mania scratcher for my best friend's mom and dad (they kind of take the place of an aunt and uncle, since all of mine live outside of the U.S.). The scratcher won $50. I was hoping they would not win so that they could enter it online and win season tickets to the Redskins for 20 years, but I am still happy for them that they won $50.

I really think lotteries should be a personal affair. Buying tickets for someone else is just risking complications should it be a winning ticket or should you win on another ticket unless you've both agreed to share all winnings regardless and then it's a matter of who spends more on tickets. In general, buying tickets for someone else is as bad an idea as borrowing or lending from/to family and friends.

I bought my dad a Millionaire Raffle ticket because he buys all these expensive gifts for us for Christmas, and this is the only chance I have to reciprocate.

I bought my best friend's parents (we go to see them every year on Christmas Day) a Redskins Lotto Scratcher because they are Redskins fans.

I always give my mother scratchoffs for Christmas. She never buys lottery tickets for herself and she has fun sitting there after the presents are open scratching away. And after all she's done for me in my life, if she wins there will be no one happier for her than me

Keep gambling to yourself ..Once you give tickets to a friend or relative and they hit big and forget you then you have lost a friend or relative..You start thinking wow I gave them that winner and they diden't share ..You say now it doesen't matter but after awhile it will..Human nature..Good luck...

I ain't biting on the implications of why a lottery ticket shouldn't be a gift because when I give someone a lottery ticket as a gift, it is their's and I wish them the best of luck.

The perfect gift is what a person wants....clues to what they want is what they have mentioned all year and have O-O'ed and ahh-ed over. If lottery tickets is what the person wants, it's the perfect gift.

Yes, I did yesterday for a few co-workers. We usually just give each other a card...this time I inserted 1 powerball ticket in each one. It's a small thrill, plus because I'm broke it's about the only thing I could afford.

Most of the civilized world recognizes that a lottery ticket is the worst gift one could possibly give.

Lottery Tickets make poor gifts because a vast majority of them lose.

After one minute of scratching or watching the Drawing: What was once a thoughtful gift becomes a useless piece of paper. No other gift in the world finds it's way to the Trash Can faster than a losing Lottery Ticket.

I most certainly did give tickets for Christmas gifts (and I've still gotta get some more tickets to give for some more people next week). One thing I like about buying lottery tickets for gifts.....they're quick, easy, and you (for the most part) don't have to wait in long lines unlike if you were going to buy them something from a mall or big retailer this time of year, and there's a chance that the ticket itself could be worth more than it looks.
