While MegaMillions or PowerBall jackpots aren't likely to reach a half billion dollars with their present matrixs, their combined jackpots will. With so many states offering both games, some lucky player could win them both and end up with a half billion dollars plus. I'll will be playing them both when PB comes to Ohio.

I have kept records of sales figures for a number of years, and have average sales for various numbers of rollovers in a file, coupled to a Poisson calculation of rollover probability.

It's early in this new number of players, but my figures seem to suggest that the lotteries are now selling about 1.3 times more than what they were before the addition of more states.

RJOh said it pretty good. The jackpots will increase faster. That has already been seen so far. The more people in, the quicker a winner. When the jackpots get higher, the more probability for mutiple winners now as well. We'll seldomly see many Jackpots anywhere close to $300 million like we've seen in the past at times. But that can be a good thing too. More money, for more people faster. That would work for me.

I thought it significant when a PB official went public saying the game expansion means more winners and smaller jackpots. Apparently, the powers to be don't forsee many really large jackpots. Of course, you never know.

I think the chance of a billion dollar jackpot will come when the new national game is implemented later this year.

I haven't heard or read any speculation about what the matrix will be, but the odds of winning will be probably be out of sight.

Not only is 500 million not going to happen, 300 million isn't going to happen either. It's the case of the incredible shrinking jackpots. Both jackpots are now smaller than games with half their odds (Canada's Lotto Max and Euromillions). Next year with the current set of clowns in office the amount you will get after tax will be much smaller still. It's long overdue to change the price of the tickets instead of the odds.

Powerball should have reached this milestone when they last changed their matrix for a win to 1 in 195,249,054.

From January 7, 2009 until January 31, 2010 (before the PB MM cross selling agreement went into effect) there should have been a Powerball drawing of at least a half a billion, probably more (based on these outrageous odds).

More people playing definitely means there is likely to be a winner sooner, but more people playing also means that the jackpot will get bigger sooner. With odds of 1 in 175 million we should expect that the long term average result for MM is 1 winner for every 175 million tickets sold. The Mega Millions draw video includes an estimate of the next jackpot if there is no winner. I looked up the video from the March 6, 2007 draw with the record jackpot, and the announcer said that if there were no winners the next jackpot would be 470 million. It's already been within one step of being close to a half-billion.

I was looking at the Jackpot history for MM and it is very interesting.For the past 8 years there has been JP winners no more than 2 monthsapart and multiple winners within a month on multiple occacasions.

I predict that there will be a winner before March and April at the latest.

So no I don't think MM will ever get to $500 million.

will the facts of the odds

say pb cant ever get past 500, all thx to its jackpot cap

but pb has a cap in current high 300s, once it hits the cap, it wont go above 25m per roll,

it wont last long at record levels, it be hit many times over in the high 300 to 400m range before it could ever get the cap above 500m

so MM is the clear winner, can it happen sure, but i dont think a jackpot will break 500m

The fact that there are more folks in both lotteries means the buying pool is larger in both games and there's more of a chance for a jackpot to be hit before it gets to big. A topic in the news forum suggested that the jackpots might even be lower.
