Say your number was:

345

You just add the digits up to get the sum: 3 + 4 + 5 = 12

To get the root sum, add up the result: 1 + 2 = 3

for 970 it would go like this:

9 + 7 + 0 = 16

Root sum would be 1 + 6 = 7
