I don't normally pick pennies up on the ground. Once while I was in Jamaica Plain just outside Boston I saw a twenty on the ground so I picked it up, and a few steps later I saw another one and then saw 3 more... I then realized they were all counterfiet, so i threw 'em away...

most of the time if you find a $100 dollars bill on the floor is someone trying to scam/rob you, trick you...however if you are rich you could pick up a: $50 or $100 bill on the floor if is trully lost by someone and donate it to charity....But only $50 or $100 bills...

I've learned a lot from the responses to this poll.

1) Many of you are purposefully leaving me your pennies. I appreciate it.

2) If I find one tail-up I should flip it and leave it for the next person to come by. If it's still there when I get back from the can, only then can I keep it.

3) I need to be on the lookout for a 1955 Denver-mint double dye.

4) I need to find out what a 1955 Denver-mint double dye is.

Here is my normal process upon seeing a penny on the ground:

1) See the penny

2) Pick up the penny - sometimes flip it so that I pick it up heads-side-up

3) Look at the penny

4) See what year the penny was minted

4.5) (Optional) Comment on the year that the penny was minted (e.g. if it is a 1986 penny, I'll say, That was the year I was born! If it is a 1943 penny, I'll say, That year, Easter fell on the latest day that it can fall. If, for some odd reason, it is a 1955 Denver-mint... [ More ]

Maybe not a penny, but I am not above picking up money. My thing with pennies is that I've got jars and jars of them saved up. I always pick up dimes, nickels, etc. I am a really frugal guy and have always been. My friends tease me that I am like one of those old-timers who lived through the Great Depression. I've always saved pennies. I have a bank I put them in and every so often, I roll them. It does add up over time. What I often do with the extra money is either put it on the principal of my mortgage, put it towards bills, or just save it. I'm not talking big money, like $20 or so, but it can add up over time.

as a metal detectorist, im glad 1c and 2c coins are long discontinued here in aust. sure we still get a lot of 5c and 10c peices. but once we found a $2 beach! yeah we have 1 and $2 coins here and we found 30 $2 in 1 day.

best jewelry we ever found was a silver necklace charm. but no i dont pick up pennies. even now.

In 2006 there was a couple in the UK that picked up 32 million in loose change mainly pennies and that came to grand total of 321,860.13, so a penny picked is a penny gained

If I see a penny... usually just pass it up. Same goes for most change. Actually, I can't even remember the last time I spotted change on the ground.

I do save all change I get from places, though. I cash it all in after a few months and it really does add up. Would never think of just throwing it out the window like you witnessed.

In one of the threads about this kind of thing someone, I think sully16, mentioned if you find a penny heads up to take it home and tape it to your door, it's good luck.

They also said if you find a penny face down, flip it over to heads and leave it for luck for the next person.

I pick up pennies anywhere I find them. Enough of them eventually add up to real money.

I was at a red light recently, and someone in the car in the next lane rolled down the window and tossed out a handful of pennies.

I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they manage the lesser coins. People who toss them like that are likely to be the same people who end up broke five years after winning the lottery.
