Many of those other cities you're thinking of have minor league baseball and hockey teams, or college football and basketball teams.

Major league baseball's farm team system includes AAA, AA, A and unaffiliated leagues. AAA teams will be in towns the size of Las Vegas or Salt Lake City, AA in towns like Birmingham, Alabama, etc....
