Truecritic: I was referring to his questions. I just looked as his profile. He posted everything over relatively short time after joining LP and hasn't posted anything since. I hadn't seen the one from the other thread but it seems to be just rhetorical question. Maybe an alternate ID of someone, maybe a troll, maybe just someone bouncing through surfing who had a momentary axe to grind, ground it, and went on to greater things somewhere else.

No, I simply picked an assortment of players. Postal workers are far from poor. Garbage workers are far from poor. People playing lotteries while on welfare have been brought up here countless times. I'm truly disappointed. When Joey arrived on the scene, I thought the Loyal Opposition had finally found a fair mediator and spokesperson. It was not to be. Look at what he writes now. A couple of his early efforts were almost worthy of that 'A' he covets, but his juvenile expressions at this juncture are hardly deserving of a 'C'. I think Team Digits should start scouting for a new representative as this bearer has let them down.

You'll probably agree the question carried considerable baggage by implication. Maybe something rhyming with only the poor and uneducated play the lottery , but with an undercurrent that anyone with a math background would have better sense than to play the lotteries.

considering that this is a 'mathematics' forum, and the focus is about 'mathematics', I don't think it's unusual to ask about 'mathematicians' and not 'garbage collectors'. If it were called the garbage collection forum, then it might be natural to ask how many garbage collectors play the lottery , lol.

Let's not overlook the possibility that if Amnightus was interested in garbage collectors, he would be smart enough to post in the Lottery Discussion Forum.

i know of about 3 people who are or had maths education in university.

one a pal, he never plays lotto, but will always want to tell yuo how to play.

another is a uni lecturer, who also contracted to the lotto on devising the odds payout tables for keno here, and he never plays.

another is an engineer, who altthough, esposuse lotto is a suckers bet, does play and hit a 5+b once here, about $8k,

i happily pointed out that thats it for his luck, he's never gonna get the jackp... [ More ]

Is there some reason you picked mathematicians? I mean you could have asked how many garbage collectors play the lottery, how many postal workers, how many welfare recipients, etc;

What good does it do to know if, say there were, 1,000 mathematicians that played the lottery last year? Without tying it into some other facet of playing the lottery? Were you wondering if they (mathematicians) have won more than their share of lottery prizes

RL: For jimmy every question, every statement, every nuance is a direct or indirect opportunity to sally forth and release all those pent up insecurities he got from other kids chasing him home from school and throwing rocks at him when he was a kid. There was a reason they chased him home that way and threw rocks at him, but he just couldn't change what he is, and more importantly, what he isn't.

It's interesting how so many articles on this like to talk about how huge the odds are that someone would win 4 jackpots. The total odds they quote are those you get when you multiply the 4 individual odds together. I don't think she was predicting those hits in advance.

Of all the jackpot winners I've ever seen interviewed only one referred to a formula and what he said was so confusing that the reportyer who asked him about it only looked at the camera and said, You get that folks?

Have the people here ever thought about the lotteries having mathematicians on the payroll or as consultants?

None of us can know the answer to the first question because of the anonymity provided by the web and by this site.

As to the answer to the second question we can only answer from our own personal experience and knowledge of our acquaintances who fell within the description you provided.

Math is good for calculating the odds and knowing what you are up against.

As far as trying to use it to win lotto that's about like thinking the puzzle game of Sudoku is a math game, which it isn't, it's logic.

In lotteries one and only one winning combination is drawn, out of millions.

You first, I know that doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, have all won jackpots in the past so I would

say that within the population of members here at LP that the results would be very much the same as they

would be within the general population. Any statistician worthy of their trade should be able to calculate

this without much error.
