Wouldn't it be nice if it worked that way and you are the winner of a portion of the jackpot? Sorry; that is not how the pay-off works. By having all 6 numbers; this would not qualify you for all of the lessor prize groups. Your prize will be the jackpot or a portion thereof. Good question for new lottery players.

yeah but the 2nd tier prize will also inclue all the 12345+7, 12345 + 8, 12345+ 1 etc and from what i can tell theres always about 50 more of them than the str8 6 numbers

It's entirely possible; it's just very unlikely. Imagine that powerball reaches the cap and then rolls another couple of times. That would mean a cash jackpot of about $200 million, while the additional cash in the 2nd place prize pool could easily be over $100 million. Now imagine that the winning numbers, including the power ball, happen to match the numbers from a batch of fortune cookies and you've got 100 or more jackpot winners... [ More ]

The PA game rules for Powerball indicate a fixed $200,000 2nd tier prize, with the possibility of multiplying it up to $1M if you buy the $2 Powerplay ticket.

So, to me, it looks possible for the Jackpot to end up less than the 2nd prize.

I didn't read all the fine print, but I agree with RJOh that the lotteries would probably not pay more than the parimutel amount for the jackpots.

When you win a higher tier prize, even a jackpot, all the lower tier prizes below your win are considered to be in there. So if you win a four number prize, the four three number prizes covered contribute their share to what you collect. If there were ever a case where the jackpot was to split as to be lower than the average five number prize, you can be sure the five number prize for that draw would be what you'd normally collect for a four number prize. It's all relative.

i dont think its possible for the 2nd prize to be higher. here we wonce had 40+ people win div 1 and collected $6k ea. div 2 is 5 and 1 sup, so you didnt actually get the bonus ball, you got div 3 that would be 5 only . anyhow i dont recall the exact prize for div 2 but im sure it was in the $100's not the usual thousands

Every states have contingency plans to limit their liability in case there are more winners than expected so why would they increase their liability by allowing players to collect more than they won. The answer is NO.

Along with what rdgrnr and dr65 said, the payout charts are very specific.

5 + 1 is 5 + 1, not 5 + 0.

Going by your scenario in the OP you would have all the prizes from having only the MM or PB number, up to the jackpot.

It just doesn't work that way.
