just an FYI, here is a response that I got from the FL Lottery when I asked about a scratch game Top Prize. Apparently, at least in FL, the Lottery KNOWS when a Top Prize ticket is SOLD:

Dear Mr. xxxxx,

Thank you for writing the Florida Lottery. In response to your e-mail, the $250,000 Monopoly TOP PRIZE may be sold, but not claimed at the time.

not true. I checked with lottery they don't know till someone comes forward to claim the prize.

When you buy a scratcher from a clerk they scan it before giving it to you, machines scan it before dispensing it. At that point the lotery knows a top prize was sold.

How about only buying recently released lottery tickets? It is very unlikely that a one month old game already has all its tickets with top prizes purchased.

Florida only shows TOP prizes left ! I think that stinks. They should show lower tier prizes so we know what we're up against.

Fl has about ten scratchers in play with zero top prizes !! Can you believe that

The advantage of scratch off is it pays 65 -75% in terms of prizes as opposed to 50% for draw lotteries but one big beef with Scratchers is you could be wasting your money when the top prizes are taken. Lottery posts prizes unclaimed on their website but there is some flaw with it, the receipient of top prize may not claim the prize from weeks to months and then lottey make take a week or two to update the website.
