If you're playing front pair or back pair, 81 would be the correct number using 9 digits.

Let's say you're positive the digit 1 will be drawn in your next pick-3 drawing but don't know in which digit position or how many times. You could play all the box combos using the digit 1 . There are 90 doubles and 120 single box combinations in pick-3 games but you only want the combos using the digit 1 . Hmm, isn't the answer 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1?

They are only using two number combos and want each number with each of the other 8 numbers, it's 9 times 8 divided by 2. The reason 72 is divided by 2 is because in Keno the combo 1-9 is the same as the combo 9-1 and 2-8 is the same as 8-2, ect.

In Keno since each number can only be drawn once. it can't be 81 (9X9) so start with 72 (9X8). And because 1-9 is the same as 9-1, 2-8, 8-2, etc., divide 72 by 2 and you'll have 36 two number combos using 9 numbers.

Dr. San was helpful enough to show all 36 combos and if you use A to I instead of 1 to 9, you can substitute your 9 numbers for each letter.

Yes, 81 including doubles if that game has doubles otherwise it would be fewer, I am not sure, but without doubles maybe only 72.
