Well I went to my sister's for holiday dinner and got her and her husband a mega millions ticket for tuesday. They said that they would give me back the $2 I spent on the ticket when they win. I was like thanks alot guys don't be so generous. Oh well its the thought that counts! Merry christmas everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-weshar75

i bought some easy picks and gave them away as xmas gifts. one family member stated, if they win they'll give me %10. i didnt really expect anything back. but found it hard to say no dont bother when the time was ripe. actually I dont want anything, but if the jackpot was won i might like a gift then.

You made no mention of federal tax. I said I know the taxes are taken out but I was going to an extreme to make a point.

You playing for someone else implies at least some kind of partnership or sharing the wealth, however the way you're describing it is one and only one of the partners pays the tax.

Read savagegoose's post, you would setiously be better offc playing the same numbers on both tickets.

oic instead of playing 1 ticket and sharing the cash around and worrying about taxes.

buy x tixs with same number and hand 1 to each person you want to gwet a cut of your numbers.

so if it was you mum and dad, and win was $15 mill, ea would get a $5 M prize and deal with their own taxes!

sounds too sensible, if it was $3 spent, could as easily be 3 different sets of 6 numbers and have more chance of winning?

Here's what I mean by a sticky wicket tax wise. You play a separate ticket for someone else, different numbers.

You hit or they hit. Let's say they hit, let's say $20 million. Regrdless of state tax, Fed. tax would be 30%, right?Or were you somehow going to skip the federal tax?

Diffenet numbers. Yhey're usually qps. I don't understand how it would be sticky wicket tax wise . I am being serious. could you explain it to me please in the mean time I found the tax witholdings for each State on the MM site.

Arizona 5% state withholding (Arizona residents), 6% state withholding (non-Arizona residents)

Arkansas 7% state withholding

California No state tax on lottery prizes

Colorado 4% state withholding

Connecticut 6.7% state withholding

I don't have a friend with whom I would ever share a lottery jackpot or one that would ever share a lottery jackpot with me so I neither give or accept lottery tickets. I don't want someone thinking having once bought me a lottery ticket, they now can expect to share any jackpot I might win in the future.

OP - if this person is a good enough friend of yours at work, why not just buy tix for yourself and then give them a check if you win?

Buying tix for someone could end badly if they win a huge jackpot.

No, I don't give away tickets that could be worth an amount I'd be jealous over. I only give away scratch tickets that could be worth a maximum of 10 grand.

People are funny about money. Lots of it can change everything about them. If you give a ticket worth 100 million to your best friend in the world, there's no guarantee he'll share even a hundred thousand with you. There's a good chance he'd buy you dinner and call it even, then dump you saying how much you changed after he got rich.... [ More ]
