There have been times where people in Cali matching 5 white balls have won in EXCESS of the $250,000.00 depending on the Jackpot (MM)

Life is unfair. Nothing that can be done about it.

I agree...I wouldn't be too happy with that payout.

On the other hand, California doesn't tax its residents on lottery winnings, so that could mean lots of extra $$$ if you were lucky enough to hit the big one.

Don't move to California. Here in San Diego it is getting all the way down to the lower 50s at night and barely hitting the upper 70s during the day...brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! And don't forget about those earthquakes. Yeah, it's best for you to stay where you live now and NOT move to California.

Being that winning a second prize with 5 + 0 numbers is likely a once in a lifetime event, I'd much prefer the fixed payout as opposed to pari-mutuel.

I wouldn't like the idea that I'm paying the same for a ticket as the rest of the country, while in a preponderance of games, I stand to win much less.

Each individual state is responsible for the MM secondary prizes and California opted for pari-mutual payoffs instead of fixed. The jackpots in rolling pick-5 and lotto games are split when there are multiple winners too. In games with fixed jackpot payouts, there is a limit on how much can be paid. The Ohio Buckeye 5 game paid $100,000 for matching all 5 numbers with a limit of $1 million and one night there were 55 winning tickets or $18,182 for each ticket. Although it's a multi-state game, like all multi-state games, the only thing that is really shared between the states in the jackpot pool. All the lower-tier prizes are basically an in-state game, with payouts coming out of the money collected within that particular state.

That's why California can have pari-mutuel prizes, while all the other states use the standard fixed payout structure.

California has a state law that prohibits fixed payouts.

Did the Cali winners play all together and that was their shared respective payouts from one ticket ? If not ya gotta chuckle at the taxes and other goodies that were removed to give them that little of a payday(ouch). Glad I am down here in the sunshine and prune juice consumption state

yeah, you're right ridge, it would suck if i won 60 grand, what a bummer. I spend that much in a month just on wine alone. pocket change. pfffft

Now if i won 3 trillion, now we're talking.

c'mon ridge, 60 grand, i'd bet it would make a lot of people happy.

California is a pari-mutuel state. The more betting money is wagered the larger the prize fund, the larger the payouts. Conversely if not many people are betting (as with last night), unless you hit the jackpot you get duped.

On the plus side if your playing pick 4 in CA and hit a straight for a $1 wager, most states will give you $5k, I've seen in the past where heavy betting gave as much as $7-10k.

I would say to these poor winners (losers?), to sue CA, but I thin... [ More ]

I was just looking at the payouts for last Tuesday's MegaMillions on the USAMEGA site.

People in two other states who had 5 numbers each won $250,000.

Three people had 5 numbers in California. They each won $60,580.

Man, that would suck.
